ST. CLAIR SHORES — Rochester United facing a determined St. Clair Shores Lakers team skated to a 3-1 at the SCS Civic Arena on Saturday night.

Goalie Ian Mercer turned back 30 of 31 shots and assisted on Rochester United’s second period goal to lead the team to victory.

“We haven’t had many opportunities this season to close out games”, remarked Rochester Coach Dave Underdale after the game.  “The St. Clair Shores team is hard to play against as they play an aggressive style which could cause our team to lose its discipline.  I thought that was the case in the last half of the second period where we were repeatedly going to the penalty box.

“But in the third period we played responsibly in our defensive zone, and we were able to keep the puck deep in their zone when we had the chance,” continued Underdale. “We did not give them many opportunities with turnovers, and we were able to add a third period score to go up by two. We also got a big lift from our third line tonight with two goals — they really stepped up big.”

Rochester United opened the scoring mid way through the first period on a one timer by Eric Lonczynski from Tony Nassar (a two-point night).

At 7:37 of the second period, Rochester took a two goal lead on a hard wrist shot from Tony Nassar that was tucked into the far corner of the net with the help from a slick pass from of Mercer.

St. Clair Shores responded three minutes later with a goal that brought the home team fans to life.  The remainder of the period belonged to St. Clair Shores with sustained pressure in the Rochester end of the rink — for the period St. Clair Shores outshot Rochester 16-6.

The chippy play of the second turned into a fast paced, skating and passing display in the third period.  The Rochester team exhibited good puck movement, and scored what proved to be the final goal at 6:36 by Tim Minotas to safe-guard the lead.
