Oakland finishes first, second at Kenyon Quad

GAMBIER, Ohio – Eighteen top-two finishes led the way for the Oakland University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams on the final day of the Kenyon Quad Meet, Saturday morning.

On the men’s side, Oakland scored 672 points to win by 147 points over Kenyon College.  Rounding out the scoring was Ashland with 200.5 points and Cincinnati with 190.5 points.  On the women’s side, Cincinnati scored 549 point, holding off OU with 507 for OU and Kenyon College with 490.  Ashland closed out the scoring with 164 points.

For the men, the Golden Grizzlies won seven events giving them 15 victories on the weekend.  Freshman Jordan Zendejas captured the 3-meter springboard with a league best score of 329 points.  The Golden Grizzlies picked up individual wins from sophomore Alex Aceino in the 100-yard butterfly (50.72), freshman Amr el Sayed in the 500 freestyle (4:34.14), freshman Grant Harding in the 100 backstroke (50.74) and freshman Matyas Keresztes in the 100 free (45.64).

Oakland scored relay victories with senior Marcin Unold, junior Ben Vavra, sophomore Josh Wolf and Keresztes in the 200 medley (1:32.68) and Keresztes, Harding, Aceino and Unold in the 200 free (1:22.95).  In a late result from Friday evening, el Sayed swam 9:27.53 to win the 1000 free.

For the women’s side, Oakland brought home four first place finishes, giving them eight for the weekend.  Junior Marcella Barretta scored a league best 332.95 points to win the 3-meter springboard.  Additional first place finishes came from freshman Vanessza Balogh in the 500 free (4:59.45), sophomore Alyssa Busch in the 100 back (58.66) and the 200 medley relay team of Busch, junior Johanna Gustafsson, sophomore Sandra Czerska and junior Alyssa Vela (1:47.86).

The Golden Grizzlies received runner-up performances from Balogh in the 400 individual medley (4:40.71) and Czerska in the 100 fly (57.28).

Oakland closes out the regular season, Saturday, Jan. 29, against Michigan State.  The meet, which will be the last home meet for the OU seniors, is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
