Oakland tankers pulls off trifecta
ELMHURST, Ill. – Oakland made it a clean sweep as junior Marcella Barretta and freshman Amr el Sayed were named the Summit League Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week, announced the league office Tuesday afternoon.
This is the third straight week that Oakland has swept the award. Barretta and el Sayed win the award for the first time each.
“I’m very pleased that Marcella and Amr have won,” said head coach Pete Hovland. “Amr put together a tough double in winning the 500 and 1000 freestyle events. Anytime you can score a league best on both boards is a good performance. Marcella certainly deserved it.”
El Sayed won two events in helping Oakland win the Kenyon Quad on Jan. 21-22. He swam 9:27.53 to win the 1000-yard freestyle on Jan. 21. The next day he won the 500 free with the third fastest time in the league at 4:34.14.
Barretta also won two events as the Golden Grizzlies finished second at the Kenyon Quad on Jan. 21-22. She won the 1- and 3-meter springboard events with 310.05 and 332.95 points, respectively. Both scores were school records, best marks in the league this season and NCAA Zone Diving Championship qualifiers.
