THURSDAY’S PREP ROUNDUP: Stoney Creek springs upset on Troy; Everest thumps St. Thomas More

TROY — Rochester Stoney Creek pulled the upset of OAA White Division leader Thursday, turning back Troy 72-63.

Alex Jones led the Cougars (5-12, 5-9) with 22 points. Taylor Rawlings followed with 21 points for Stoney Creek.

John Stibich scored 23 points for Troy, while James Young added 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Colts.
CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 75, BURTON ST THOMAS MORE 45: A 17-4 start put the Mountaineers into the lead for good in this non-league boys basketball game Thursday in Burton. Everest led 35-24 at the half and used a 19-5 third quarter run to build a 54-29 advantage and put the game away. The Mountaineers iced the game with a 21-16 fourth quarter.

Noah Beauchamp led the way with 14 points for Everest. Ben Marcial added eight points and Blake Beauchamp and Richie Cross scored seven apiece for the Mountaineers (11-7).

Dan LeBlanc scored 11 and Derek LeBlanc added nine points for St. Thomas More.

ROYAL OAK 53, OXFORD 47: The Ravens earned the narrow win over Oxford Thursday at home. Dave Wagner scored 17 points for Royal Oak (8-9, 7-5). Mark Hazelwood scored 12 for Oxford (6-11, 4-7).

AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 64, BIRMINGHAM SEAHOLM 55: The Yellowjackets pulled even in the loss column with Troy for the OA White lead with this win over the Maples, coupled with Troy’s loss to Rochester Stoney Creek. Ray Tillman scored 30 points and Tony Harris twined 16 points for Avondale (14-4, 11-3). Shawn Conway scored 26 points for Seaholm (5-13, 3-9).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SOUTHFIELD 34, OXFORD 30: Southfield gained the series split with this four-point win Thursday in OAA White Division play.

Mieanna Gaines and Noelle Hairston scored eight apiece for Southfield (6-19, 5-9).

Sam Myers led Oxford with nine points, Miranda Murphy had five points and five rebounds, Kelsey Harrison had five points and six rebounds and Shelby Davis had eight rebound game Friday at home against league runner-up West Bloomfield.

Oxford (3-16, 3-10) faces Romeo in Class A district play at Lake Orion Monday at 5:30 p.m.

“For some reason, we didn’t come out with our normal energy and got into foul trouble early,” offered Oxford coach Al Poynter. “We battled back and took the lead in the second half but then stopped doing the things that we did to get the lead in the first place.  This game is another teachable moment and learning experience for our team as we move forward.”
