TUESDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL: Rochester upends Stoney Creek on Apostal’s buzzer-beater; Clarkston thumps Lathrup

ROCHESTER HILLS — Kurt Apostal scored on a lay-up with only a second left Tuesday, in leading Rochester to a 54-52 OAA crossover boys basketball triumph over arch-rival Rochester Stoney Creek.

Stoney Creek led 28-21 at the half only to see Rochester close with a 33-24 second half. The Falcons used a 19-10 surge in the third quarter to take a 40-38 lead entering the final stanza.

Taylor Perry scored 17 and Billy Klotz added 11 points for Rochester (13-4), which has lost only once between January and February.

Tyler Curtis scored 14, Blake Wisemann and Alex Jones followed with 10 points apiece and Taylor Rawlings had eight points for Stoney Creek (4-12).

CLARKSTON 82, SOUTHFIELD-LATHRUP 53: Clarkston continued its torrid pace, winning its eighth straight and staying in the OAA Red Division hunt with this 29-point triumph Tuesday.

Nick Tatu scorched the nets for a game-high 28 points, canning six 3-pointers in the contest. Matt Rodgers scored 12, Mitch Baenzinger added 11 points and both Marcus Hardy and Jordan Dasuqi had seven points apiece for the Wolves.

Clarkson (12-5, 9-2) led only 13-10 after the first quarter and 31-24 at the half. Behind a 15-14 surge, the Wolves held a 46-38 advantage entering the fourth quarter, where Clarkston ignited for a 34-15 fireworks display to break the game open.

Jonathan Williams exploded for 26 points for Lathrup and Jametetrius added 11 points for the Chargers (7-10, 4-7).

AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 55, ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 40: The Lancers remained in a first-place tie with Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett in the MIAC Blue Division with this 15-point victory Tuesday over rival Lutheran Northwest.

Drew Perrin and D.J. Stevens scored 11 apiece for Oakland Christian (16-1, 11-1). Nathan Piasecki scored nine and Charles Hayden added eight points for the Lancers, who led 25-17 at the half and 44-29 through three quarters of play.

Josh Morrison scored nine, while Nathan Drews and Gursher Rathore scored seven apiece for Northwest (8-8, 6-6).
BIRMINGHAM GROVES 55, LAKE ORION 51: Anthony Henry scored 15 to lead the Falcons past the Dragons in OAA crossover play Tuesday. Mark Corless added nine points and Emmanuel Thomas twined eight points for Groves. The Falcons used a 20-4 third-quarter spurt to go up 44-29 entering the final frame.

Chaz Miller scored 12 and John McCatty added eight points for the Dragons, who led 25-24 at the half. Lake Orion’s 22-11 fourth quarter comeback fell four points shy.

ORTONVILLE BRANDON 71, OXFORD 42: Brandon got the best of Oxford in this neighboring rivalry game Tuesday in Ortonville.

Dan Grost tallied 11 points, Luke Cinader and Dylan Morris both scored nine, and Docy Feltner chipped in with eight points for the Blackhawks, who picked up a total of nine-3-pointers from six different players, including a trio of bombs from Morris.

Mark Hazelwood scored 14 for Oxford (5-13), which was outscored 36-20 over the middle two quarters.
