Oakland posts softball split with Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Junior Kylie Schalz had two hits including a grand slam home run and senior Marisa Everitt struck out nine batters as the Oakland University softball team split a doubleheader with Eastern Michigan (20-8) Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Oakland (9-21) won the first game 6-1 while Eastern Michigan (20-8) took the night cap in five innings, 10-2.

“We did not finish today,” said head coach LaDonia Hughes.  “We came out and played every inning in the first game.  Marisa (Everitt) threw a good game today.  We were aggressive at the plate late in the game.  We played great defense.  In the second game, we just didn’t come out aggressive and got too far behind.”

In the bottom of the second, McKenna Russ singled and moved to second on a ground out.  Nellie Coquillard laced a single to left center field to score Russ.

In the sixth inning, senior Alyssa Deacon singled down the third base line and freshman Erika Polidori reached on an error.  Junior Kelsey Krych dropped a single into left field to load the bases.  Schalz blasted the ball over the right center field fence to make it 4-1.  It was her second grand slam of the season and third in her career.

The Golden Grizzlies would score twice in the seventh.  Eastern Michigan went 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.

For Oakland, Schalz had a grand slam home run and Krych went 2-for-3.  Everitt (4-4) gave up five hits, one run, walked two and struck out nine in seven innings of work.

For Eastern Michigan, Jaclyn Caro (1-3) gave up six hits, six runs, three earned, walked two and struck out six in seven innings.

In the nightcap ,in the first inning, Jessica Richards singled and moved to second on a  ground out.  Allison Scherer singled to left field to score Richards.  The Eagles would score three runs in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, freshmen Shelby Gott and Alyssa Shriver dropped in singles to put two on.  Deacon singled through the left side to load the bases.  Polidori drilled a single up the middle to score Gott and Shriver and move Deacon to second.  EMU got a strike out and turned a double play to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, Scherer hit a three-run shot over the left field fence to make it 7-2.  The Eagles would score three more times to make it 10-2.

For Oakland, Shriver was 2-for-2 with a double and Polidori drove in two runs.  Senior Alison Tansel (2-6) gave up seven hits, seven runs, five of them earned and walked one in 3.1 innings.

For Eastern Michigan, Scherer was 2-for-3, had a home run and drove in four run while Russ and Lindsey Smith had two hits each.  Lauren Wells (7-1) gave up two hits and struck out three in three innings.

Oakland is back home, Friday-Saturday, April 15-16, taking on Southern Utah.  The doubleheader on the 15th is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. while the game on the 16th has a noon start time.  All three games will be available via live stats at www.ougrizzlies.com
