OU’s Coriasso cards 67 to win Battle at the Warren

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Junior Michael Coriasso claimed medalist honors with a 4-under-par 67 as the Oakland University men’s golf team finished second in the Battle at the Warren with score of 292 (+8), 11 shots behind host Notre Dame (281/-3) on Wednesday at Warren Golf Course (Par 71, 7,020 yards). Coriasso, a native of Grand Blanc, Mich., picked up his first tournament win of his collegiate career.

“I am pleased with the way we played today on a tough golf course,” said OU coach Brian Costello. “This is the type of course we would see at the NCAA Regional Championships. It was a strong performance right before we head to the league championship next week.

“I am proud of the way Michael (Coriasso) played today, and he has stepped up his game as of late. This is a great win and I expect more of this as his career moves forward at Oakland.”

Sophomore Jakob Ziegler shot an even-par 71and sophomore transfer Phil Gieseker posted a 4-over-par score of 75 to lead the Golden Grizzlies. The Irish’s Max Scodro and Jeff Chen each carded scores of 69 (-2) to finish in a tie for second place, two shots behind Coriasso. OU’s Ziegler finished in a tie for fifth place.

Detroit finished third (297/+13), Bradley fourth (300/+16) and Jackson State was fifth (302/+18) in the team standings.

Senior Michael Marks shot 79, freshman Trevor Rosekrans posted a score of 80, while junior transfer Tommy Thompson shot 78 as an individual for Oakland.

The Golden Grizzlies will compete at The Summit League Championship, April 18-19, in Primm, Nev. at the Primm Valley Desert Course.
