CLARKSTON — Clarkston has only had the opportunity to play four softball games this season. The Wolves have made the most of those opportunities.
Clarkston made quick work of Montrose Monday, rolling to an 11-1 non-league triumph.
The Wolves (4-0) put together 12 hits on the day, scoring four in the first and erupting for seven in the third frame. The story was simply getting in a game in due to horrid weather, as area teams have got in a record low number of games entering the final week of April.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” admitted Don Peters, a veteran to the prep softball coaching fraternity for more than 25 years in Michigan. “We’ve played four games and April is almost over. This is the worst I’ve seen in all of my years coaching.”
Clarkston was solid in downing Montrose, both at the plate and from the circle.
Sydney Hasselbach was 3-for-3, including a triple, scored twice and drove home three runs to pace Clarkston.
Rachel Allie was 2-for-4 and scored a run, Megan Hastings had an RBI and scored twice, Sarah Altene was 1-for-2 and scored two runs and had three RBI and Rachel Pytel and Tara Perry both had a hit and plated once.
Altene gained the pitching win, striking out six of the 15 batters she faced. She gave up just one hit and didn’t allow a walk. Pytel pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
Montrose pushed its sole run across in the fifth but could not score another to avoid being mercied.
