OXFORD — Lake Orion figured to be among the leaders in the OA Red Division boys golf race this season. The Dragons took over pole position Monday at Boulder Pointe.
With three golfers in the top 10, all under 80, Lake Orion won the first of two league tournaments with a play-six, count-four team score of 310 to top the six-school field.
Lake Orion sophomore Mason Gorris shot a one-over round of 73 to earn medalist honors. Tyler Dragoo (78), Alex Waecheli (79) and Corbin Rainey (80) rounded out the Dragons’ winning total.
“We had a good score, one of our best in a while, and I think we (could have) played better,” said Lake Orion coach Monty Gallaher. “We are still very young, with one senior that plays (in tournaments). We should be a good team in the future, and I think we can be this year. With all of the big tournaments coming up, we hope to (perform well).”
Rochester Adams finished second in the team standings at 319, one stroke ahead of defending league champion Clarkston’s 320. Rochester was fourth at 324, with Rochester Stoney Creek (327) and Troy (329) rounding out the field. Only 19 strokes separated the six teams.
Ben Van Orman of Adams was second in the medalist standings with a 75, followed by Rochester’s Eric Shyu (76) and Clarkston’s Jimmy Delnick (77).
Lake Orion’s Dragoo and Clarkston’s Andrew Lange tied for fifth with rounds of 78, Stoney Creek’s Mike Doyle and Lake Orion’s Waelcheli tied for seventh at 79, and Troy’s James Heichel, Lake Orion’s Rainey and Rochester’s Paul Woo tied for eighth at 80.
Runner-up Adams only had one finisher in the top 10, but Eric Hund and Eric Busa tied for 11th with 81s and Jamie Stanton’s 82 was tied for 13th overall.
