SELFRIDGE, Mich. — Troy has picked the right time to peak out on the golf course.

The Colts posted their season-low score by nine strokes Saturday in winning a Division 1 boys golf district at Selfridge golf Course near New Baltimore.

Troy out together a play-five, count-four team score of 307 to win the team title and qualify for the regional round. The top six teams, plus the top six individuals not on those teams, advance to regional play June 8 at The Orchard golf Course near Romeo.

Macomb Dakota was second at 316, followed by Troy Athens (318), Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 321), Port Huron Northern (321) and Utica Ford (322) in the 13-school field.

“Since they added the district rounds (four years) ago, we’ve made it through every year,” said Troy coach John Getzan. “But this is the first time we’ve won a district. They guys played well. It started a few weeks ago at the county and then we played pretty well at the second league tournament. I think that carried over to the district. We had four guys shoot in the 70s. I think that’s the first time that has happened (this season).”

Troy’s James Heichel shared medalist honors with Alex McMath, as both shot three-over rounds of 75. Teammate John Graham (76), Anthony D’Amico (78) and Christian Harnishfeger (78) all finished in the top 10 to round out Troy’s team score.

James Cattran of Athens, Graham, and Utica Ford’s Kyle King all shot 76s. Athens;’ James VanNoord, Port Huron Northern’s Mason Motte both carded a 77 to tie for sixth, while D’Amico and Harnishferger shared eighth with Paul Zlojutro of Clinton Township Chippewa Valley to round out the top 10.

Troy‘s previous best this season was 316, which it posted twice this season.

“We’ve been going back with Athens all season, every time we play in the same tournament with them,” said Getzan. “Plus, there was a bunch of teams really close. It’s going to make for an interesting regional. (Warren) DeLaSalle, (Detroit) U-D Jesuit and even Grosse Pointe South all have good teams.U-D and DeLaSalle have both shot close to 300 this season. We’ll see who shows up and plays well on the right day.”
