NOTABLES: Avondale is off to a 3-1 start and is expected to contend in the OAA-White this season, although its one loss was to division rival Berkley. This may be the school’s fastest team in many years and one of the more-skilled units. Could this be a year the Yellowjackets can make a long run in the postseason?

NOTABLES: The Lancers were upset in the regional round last season despite being ranked No. 1 for a long stretch. This team lacks a bona fide star like in the previous 10 years but has the blanace and talent to still be a top-10 team in Division 4.

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Christian Academy

NOTABLES: Clarkston was a middle of the pack team last season plagued by inconsistency. This season the Wolves already own a win over Lake Orion, a team that finished ahead of them in the division and knocked them out in a pre-district contest. A storog group of underclassmen figure to blend in and help keep this team in the upper echelon of the league, which has moved from two divisions to three divisions this season.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Isaiah Peter, fr. M; Luke Pendley, fr. F/M.

KEY LOSSES: Kevin Bettinger, F (now playing at OCC); Alex Trull, M.

NOTABLES: There are only 13 players on the roster this season, as high school enrollment remains low. The Eagles graduated five players and lost another one via transfer. The school also drops down to the FBAC Blue Division after competing in the FBAC-Red since 1996. The Eagles will compete in the league against Port Huron Baptist Academy, Garden City United Christian and Wixom Christian.

SCHOOL: Holly

HEAD COACH: Mike Steibel, fifth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 17-2-1, 8-0-0 Flint Metro League (first place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 district opener to Rochester Adams (4-1).

KEY NEWCOMERS: Joe Palmisano, fr.; Taylor Mills, soph.; Randy Neuwirth, soph.

KEY LOSSES: Graduated 10 players.

NOTABLES: After starting its program in 1988, it took Holly 22 seasons to finally capture a league championship. The Bronchos, whose previous best finish in the league was runner-up in the FML in 1991 and 1998, went unbeaten in league play. The Bronchos’ only losses last season were to OAA Red Division teams, Troy and Rochester Adams, the latter coming in the first round of the postseason. The 17 wins is also a school record.

KEY LOSSES: Blake Skamiera, M/F (Michigan State); Jesus Ginez, F (Detroit Mercy);

Alex Shubitowski, D; Yohei Kanehara, M/F.

NOTABLES: Lake Orion was plagued with injuries and inconsistent play last season but still fought its way to the district finals.

SCHOOL: Lake Orion Baptist

HEAD COACH: Mike French, second season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 6-8-1, 1-7 FBAC Red Division (fifth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS Division II state finals to Clarkston Springfield Christian (6-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Elijah Cone, sr. G; Evan Hojnacki, sr. D/M; Mark Dewar, soph. S; Matt Daniels, soph. D; Jacob Noruk, soph. D; Tristan Oh, soph. M; Ben Case, jr. F; Andrew Schwartz, soph. M; Jason Noruk, soph. M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Micah Bryson, fr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Ian Brennan, fr. F.

KEY LOSSES: Nathan Shefcyk, F (playing at Clearwater Christian); Connor Welby, D.

NOTABLES: Despite having only two seniors on last year’s team, the Lions made a late push which saw them reach the MACS-II state finals. This year there are nine starters and 15 players back, so it could be a more fruitful year at LOBS, which is in its 10th year overall.

SCHOOL: Ortonville Brandon

HEAD COACH: Phil Kimmel

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 13-5-2, 5-3-0 Flint Metro League (tied-third).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Swartz Creek in Division 2 districts.

RETURNING STARTERS: Cameron Craig, sr. M; Isaac Scherer, sr. M; Ben Stowers, sr. M/F; Bruce Bayley, sr. M/F; Nick Poll, sr. D; Ryan King, sr. G; Matt Nelson, sr. M/F; Quinton Cook, jr. D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Jake Selak, jr. D; Kyle Lacroix, jr. D; Alex Bageris, jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kyle Doyon, soph. D; Tyler McCoullough, jr. M; Ty Thronson, soph. M.

KEY LOSSES: Thomas Soave, Kyle Glissman, Tyler Lozier.

NOTABLES: After climbing to third in the FML last season, the Blackhawks were upset victims by Swartz Creek in the state tournament. The good news for the Blackhawks is that only three starters graduated and that 11 players that return all started at times last season. This team should be able to remain in the upper third in the conference and contend with the like of Linden, Lapeer East and Fenton.

SCHOOL: Oxford

HEAD COACH: John Thaler, 10th season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 9-10-1, 3-8-1 OAA White Division (10th place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 district opener to Waterford Kettering.

RETURNING STARTERS: Ben Magdaleno, sr. D; Marco Bonfiglio, sr. F; Zach Hinman, jr. D; Marshall Versteeg, sr. M; Doug Klimbal, sr. M; Alex Juntti, sr. M; Tyler Mayes, sr. F; Michael Kitchner, sr. S.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Jacob Wysocki, jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Josh Nelson, jr. D.

KEY LOSSES: Dan Peck, D/F; Matt Frisch, G/D; Connor Risinger, D.

NOTABLES: This is the 29th season of Oxford soccer and it is expected to better than last season, where the wildcats struggled in the OAA White Division. This season Oxford drops down to the OAA-Blue and is expected to be one of the better teams.

REASON TO CELEBRATE: Noah Francis and his Troy Bethany Christian teammates had plenty of happy moments last season, shattering dozens of school records and winning the 2010 Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division I state championship. File Photo | Larry McKee, www.lmckeephotography.com

SCHOOL: Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

HEAD COACH: No information submitted.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD:

STATE TOURNAMENT:

RETURNING STARTERS:

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY NEWCOMERS:

KEY LOSSES:

NOTABLES:

SCHOOL: Rochester

HEAD COACH: Chris Purgatori, fourth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 9-11-0, 3-7 OAA Red Division (seventh place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 district opener to Troy (2-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Miles Dale, jr. D/F; Neil Harris, sr. D; Alex Thaden, sr.  D; Sean O’Malley, sr. D; Spiro Pliakos, soph. M;; Mike Bowyer, sr. M; Blake Giles, sr. M; Andre Abbate, sr. F.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Frank Wang, sr. D/M; Evan Asuncion, soph. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jason Lee soph. F (injured last season); Nash Popvic, fr. F (currently injured); Tyler Schudlebauer, fr. D; Matt Hawes, jr. G/D; Issac Kim, jr. M; midfield; Devin Ritchie, jr. M; Charlie Rewold, sr. M.

KEY LOSSES: Chris Stewart, G (four-year starter; Trine University).

NOTABLES: The Falcons have hovered around the five-hundred mark the past five years. If Rochester is to climb out of that funk, they will have to do so without depth.  A low number of players came out this season and there are only 17 on varsity to start the season. Rochester is 2-1-1 to start the season, tying perennial power Brighton (0-0) and losing to Rochester Adams (3-2) in two close matches.

SCHOOL: Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Josh Hickey, third season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 13-4-5, 4-0-5 OAA Red Division (third place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 regional semifinals to Grand Blanc (3-2, shootout).

RETURNING STARTERS: Dylan Knott, sr. Midfield/F (third-team all-state in 2009, second-team all-state in 2010); Ryan Ceisel, sr. D; Alex Tzonev, jr. M/F.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Alek Kowalick, sr. M; Brandon Sloan, jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Spencer Ward, fr. G; Ted Hurst, jr. D.

KEY LOSSES: Joey Censoni, M (Northwood); Alex Czirmer, D; Matt Szilard, D; Justin Kane, F; Lucas Luna, F; Ryan Dzierzawski, G; Cameron Casey, M.

NOTABLES: Since starting its program in 1981, Adams has never finished below five-hundred and finished right at five-hundred only once(2008). The Highlanders have won districts in eight of the past 11 years. This year’s group is full of new faces, but the talent level has not dropped off. Expect this side to be in the running for the OAA Red Division title and quite capable of making a long run in the postseason. Adams has made it to the state semifinals four times (1999), 2001, 2004, 2009) and won a state title in 1999.

SCHOOL: Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Adam Bican, second season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 9-9-7, 1-4-5 OAA Red Division (eighth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 district finals to Utica Eisenhower (3-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Nick Sobczynski, sr. M; Kevin Wilcox, sr. M; Sam Shafer, sr. D; Ryan Taylor, sr. D; Scott Alampi, jr. M; Nick Marn, jr. M; Francisco Kulyckyj, jr. S.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Jack Sobcynski, jr. D; Adam Anderson, jr. F; Billy Kobus, jr. F; Ben Suhajda, sr. D.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jack Lucci, fr. M; Federico Kulyckyj, fr. M.

KEY LOSSES: Aaron Hebden, M (All-State; Western Michigan); Sheldon Medici, G (Western Michigan); Ryan Finstad, D (All-Area First Team; Case Western University); Bradford Henry, D (Sienna Heights).

NOTABLES: Stoney Creek was quite competitive last season with seven ties and several one-goal losses and also beat league champion Troy late in the season. There are still several holdovers from that team and the Cougars hope to increase its number of wins this season and climb the league standings.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Christian

HEAD COACH: Jerry Slota, second season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 11-9-1, 5-3-0 FBAC Red Division (second place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS Division I state semifinals to Davison Faith Baptist (2-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Jesse Montgomery, jr. M; Andrew Zink, soph. D; Nathan Simon, sr. F/M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Josh Steiner, soph. M; Marques Thatcher, soph. G/M; Jon Armitage, jr. D; Connor Simon, soph. Chris Li, jr. F; James Adams, sr. D/M; Tyler Patton, jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Brandon Rodriguez, soph. F; Misel Hernandez, soph. F; Adriel Vyers, soph. D; Daniel Bermeister, sr. D/G; Jared Brown, soph. M; Christian Ohly, fr. M; Ryan Patton, fr. M; Liav Avihu, soph. D (transfer from Isreal).

KEY LOSSES: DJ Szydlowski, G (four-year starter); Jon Becker, D (four-year starter); Nick Patton, M; Jason Li, F; Brandon Tuttle, fr. D.

NOTABLES: After winning just four games in 2009, the Eagles turned it around last season and eventually won 11 games, finished second in their league and reached the MACS state semifinals. There were eight players that graduated from that unit, leaving many openings and questions marks for this season.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Mike Miller, fourth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 15-4-1, 13-1-0 MIAC Red division (first place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-4 district finals to Auburn Hills Oakland Christian (5-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Christian Woodfin, sr. M; Joe Klausmeier, sr. F (17 goals last season); Chris Runis, sr. G (third-year starter); Stephen Ennis, soph. S; Tyler Nowles, sr. D; Travis Kersten, sr. D; Ilijan Bonar, sr. D.

KEY LOSSES: Joe Heins, M/F; Mike Miller, M (set single-season assist record with 36); Nathan Sircy, D/M.

NOTABLES: After winning its first league title in 25 years last October and reaching the district finals, the Crusaders earned the right to jump up to the MIAC Blue Division to tangle with state powerhouse teams such as Oakland Christian, Ann Arbor Greenhills, Southfield Christian, Plymouth Christian, Allen Park Inter-City Baptist and Birmingham Roeper. The Crusaders have talent but will likely be a middle-of-the-pack team in the state’s top D-4 conference.

SCHOOL: Troy

HEAD COACH: Brian Zawislak, first season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 18-3-1, 8-1-1 OAA Red Division (first place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 regional finals to Grand Blanc (3-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Matt Smolinski, jr. G (All-State Second Team); Jason Leslie, sr. F (All-OAA); David Eicher, sr. D (All-OAA); Zach Doepke, jr. M (All-OAA); Ian Fox, jr. F; Luke Ridenour, jr. D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: AJ Kalina, sr. M; Fillip Bunwewicz, sr. M; Mitch Judy, srf. D; Anthony Panella, sr. D; Andrew Farran, sr. G;

KEY NEWCOMERS: Steven Schmidt, sr. F; Jake Houhanisin, sr. M; Jacob Meissner, soph. F; Craig Duggan, soph. G; Brandon Riddle, jr. D; Chris Dorsey, soph. M; Danny Berger, jr. M; Allan Wang, soph. D; Willie Maddox, fr. D; Ahmad Aly, jr. M; Aaron Faison, jr. M.

KEY LOSSES: Sean Cunningham (All-State Dream Team; now playing overseas); Jeff Bumbales, M (all-league; Cody Savoie, M; Anthony D’Amico, M; Connor Luyckx, F.

NOTABLES: After graduating 15 players from its 2009 team, Troy still repeated as league champions and made the Elite Eight in 2010. There are still several key players back and one of the state’s top goalkeepers, so there’s no reason why Troy won’t remain in the front pack of teams in the league, Oakland County and the state; Zawislak, the junior varsity coach the past few years, takes over for Dave Hicklin, who resigned in June. Zawislak, a former all-state player at Livonia Churchill, led Troy girls team to the Division 1 state runner-up trophy in June.

SCHOOL: Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Todd Heugh, first season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 9-7-3, 3-5-2 OAA Red Division (sixth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 district finals to Sterling Heights Stevenson (2-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Sandy Mouch, sr. M (fourth-year starter, D-I college recruit); Alex Serwatka, sr. M/F(fourth-year player, D-I recruit); Sunnyn Shettigar, sr. F (committed to D-I Cornell); Matt Dombrowski, sr. M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Tim Freiman, sr. D; Mike Elias, sr. D; Alex Valencia, sr. D; Carl Rizzi, sr. D; TJ Morton, sr. M; Sam Ward, sr. G; Brett Schmitz, jr. G.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Matt Perkins, sr. M/D (injured last season); Adam Shaikh, sr. F; Max Klitzke, jr. F;  Patrick Pale, Jr. F;  Danny Harris, jr. D; Tony Garascia, jr. M;  Trey Lundmark, jr. M; Mike Bordas, jr. M; Tyler Gasko, soph. F; Adam Antosh, soph. D; Adam Gebauer, soph. M.

LOSSES: Tyler Channell, M (playing at Saginaw Valley State); Alec Bezzera, G (Wisconsin-Parkside);

NOTABLES: This is the first year for coach Heugh, who has coached high school and club in the area for 15 years and is a 1990 grad of Athens and a starter on the school’s 1989 Class A state championship team. The Red Hawks are off to a 1-2-0 start but could be a contender in the league after returning over half of the roster. Heugh is a defensive-minded coach whose teams regularly don’t give up much offense.

SCHOOL: Troy Bethany Christian

HEAD COACH: Phillip Fourgere, seventh season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 20-2-1, 8-0-0 FBAC Red Division (first place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Captured MACS Division I state title, defeating Davison Faith Baptist in the finals (2-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Ajay Solomon, sr. G (posted a GAA of 0.78 over 23 games last year); Tyler Parsons, sr. F (third leading scorer last year); Noah Francis, jr. F (second-leading scorer last season, 19 goals); Daniel Sprankle, sr. M (34 assists last season); Mark Bishop, sr. D; Ryan Woodham, jr. M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Tim Crisan, sr. M; Josh Grono, jr. M; Bret Hayhurst, jr. D/G.

KEY LOSSES: Travis Woodham, M (League MVP, set single-season school record with 37 goals). Jono Grono, D (all-league).

NOTABLES: The Bruins captured their first state title since 1986 last fall and return over half of that team this season. Bethany Christian has won four straight league titles as well and have not lost a conference game in nearly four years. Expect this team to challenge for the league title once again and make a run in the MACS tournament.
