Southern Methodist blasts Oakland at Hurricane Classic

TULSA, Okla. – Southern Methodist simply punished Oakland on its mistakes. The result was a lopsided finish at the Hurricane classic.

Andrew Barrett scored on a penalty kick, but the Oakland men’s soccer team lost 4-1 to Southern Methodist on Friday in the Hurricane Classic hosted by the University of Tulsa. The Mustangs outshot the Golden Grizzlies 13-7 in the match, which was played at the Hurricanes Soccer Complex.

“Tonight we were beaten by a very good SMU team that punished us for every individual mistake we made,” said head coach Eric Pogue. “We knew we were going to have to play a great all-around game to have success tonight and that only happened in stretches during the match.”

Barrett netted his first goal of the season from the penalty spot to make it 3-1, but Oakland (0-4-1) was not able to pull level. Barrett had two shots in the second half to lead OU. The Golden Grizzlies equaled the Mustangs with five shots each in the second half.

“I was happy with the play of some of our young players off the bench,” added Pogue. “But we need a few of our veteran players to play more consistently and at a much higher level moving forward.”

The Mustangs (2-2-2) took the lead in the 29th minute on a goal by Ian Kalis, who got on the end of a corner kick by Arthur Ivo. SMU outshot Oakland 8-2 in the first half.

SMU doubled the lead in the 51st minute when Damian Rosales scored on Ivo’s second assist of the match. Zach Barnes made it 3-0 in favor of the Mustangs with a goal in the 68th minute on an assist from Tyler Engel. With the score 3-1, Engel netted a goal of his own on an assist from Joe Cooper.

Oakland goalkeeper Scott Messer finished the night with four saves, as SMU had an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. The Mustangs used a pair of goalkeepers, with Jaime Ibarra posting three saves and substitute Devin Cook making one save.

“The good part is that we have a short turnaround to get back out there,” said Pogue. “The unfortunate thing is that the road doesn’t get any easier against another quality opponent in Tulsa.”

The Golden Grizzlies return to action on Sunday at 1:30 CT against the host Golden Hurricanes of Tulsa.
