Oakland links up for ninth-place showing at Redbird Invitational
NORMAL, Ill. – Alanna Gerber posted a final round score of 77 and finished with an overall score of 227 (+11/T9) to lead the Oakland University women’s golf team on the final day of the Redbird Invitational on Sunday at Weibring Golf Club (Par 72, 6,160 yards).
The Golden Grizzlies finished in ninth place after shooting 323 in the final round to post a total score of 951 (308-320-323/+87). The hosts from Illinois State won the event with an overall score of 917 (+53). Southern Illinois finished in second place with a score of 926 (+62). Day-one leaders Ball State finished third at 928 (+63). Toledo finished fourth, shooting 929 (+64) and Bowling Green was fifth place with a score of 932 (+67) to round out the top five.
“There will be better days ahead,” said OU coach Russ Cunningham. “This weekend allowed me to see our players compete under abnormal circumstances and, although the final results weren’t up to our expectations, the team has grown stronger from the experience.”
Liz Ecker shot an 81in the final round to finish at 238 (+22/T26). Brandi Studer carded a final round of 80 and finished the tournament with a score of 246 (+30/T57). Mara Kovac shot an 85on Sunday and finished at 245 (+29/T50) for the tournament.
Kassandra Komma rounded posted an 87 in her final round and finished with a total of 248 (+32/T63). Maya Parsons also played the event as an individual and carded an 80 in her final round to finish with a score of 240 (+24/T35).
“There are a number of positives to take away from this tournament are,” said Cunningham. “Alanna Gerber has taken her game to a higher level, our two freshmen, Maya Parsons and Brandi Studer both gained valuable experience and we now know what we have to work on to consistently shoot good scores.”
Oakland returns to the golf course on Saturday for first-round play at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
