Rochester runs third at Algonac Classic

GOODELS, Mich. — Grosse Pointe South had four of the top five finishers and validated itself as one of the girls cross country top teams in the state by winning the Algonac Muskrats Classic Saturday at Goodels Park near Port Huron.

The Blue Devils had the top three finishers, the fifth-place finisher and the 12th-place finisher to win going away with 25 points.

Utica Eisenhower edged Rochester for second place (76-77), while Grosse Pointe North was fourth (86) and Clinton Township Chippewa Valley fifth (127) in the Division I field.

South’s Hannah Meier won with an 18:07 clocking, followed by transfer Kelsey Schwartz (18:22) and Haley Meier (18:49). Ersula Farrow was fifth (19:59) and Kelly Langton 14th (21:28) for South.

Jessica Goethals was fourth in 19:57 to pace Rochester. Allison Skelcy ran 13th (21:27), Erica Munyan 19th (21:46), Elise Walker 20th (21:50) and Nivi Nagaraj 24th (22:09) for the Falcons.

New Baltimore Anchor Bay claimed sixth (167), followed by St. Clair Shores Lakeview (207), Port Huron Northern (239), Port Huron (247), Roseville (261), Farmington Harrison (no team score) and Sterling Heights (no team score).

In the boys race, Rochester’s Blake Pozolo clocked 16:45 to win by eight seconds over Eddie Komph of Anchor Bay (16:53). Grosse Pointe South’s Austin Montgomery (17:14), Eisenhower’s Kevin Salter (17:22) Grosse Pointe North’s Nick Finley (17:22) rounded out the top five.

Port Huron Northern won the boys team title with 48 points, followed by Grosse Pointe South (93), Grosse Pointe North (112), Rochester (128) and Utica Eisenhower (136) in the top five. Lakeview was sixth (146), with Farmington Harrison (149), Port Huron (192), Anchor Bay (211), Chippewa Valley (212) and Roseville (309) rounding out the team scores.

Aaron Walker was 15th (17:57), Dillon Smith 20th (18:03), Gavin Kata 43rd (19:11) and Ryan Freeland 44th (19:12) for Rochester.
