ROCHESTER HILLS — As one of the state’s leading rushers, Prescott Line has drawn plenty of attention this season. He was back at it again Friday.
Entering a OAA White Division showdown at Rochester Adams, Line had rushed for nearly 1,163 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. The Southern Methodist recruit outdid himself once again, scoring three more touchdowns and collecting more than 200 yards in a 22-16 victory.
In fact, Line had 255 total yards and his touchdown run in overtime was enough to propel the Wildcats to a second straight win and moved them into fourth-place tie in the OAA White Division with Adams but behind Farmington Harrison, Southfield and Farmington with three weeks to go in the regular season.
Southfield and Farmington play Saturday.
“We wanted this more than anything,” smiled Line, who recovered a fumble in overtime to help seal the win. “I think everyone brought it all. We had to win this game.”
The defeat was Adams’ first homecoming loss in 14 years.
“The guys came in here to Adams, a very good football program, and came out with the win,” Oxford coach Bud Rowley said. “I couldn’t be prouder than I am of these guys.”
The two teams battled to a 10-10 halftime tie.
In the third quarter, Dave Jagow scored from 5 yards out to put Adams up, 16-10, although the kick was missed. Jagow had 74 rushing yards on 12 carries for Adams (4-2, 3-2), which lost a heartbreak to Southfield last Saturday.
In the fourth quarter, Line scored on a 2-yard run, although the Highlanders blocked the extra point to forge overtime. That’s where Line scored on a 7-yard scamper to put his team ahead for good.
The Wildcats and Highlanders traded field goals in the first quarter, with Ryan Ceisel connecting on a 46-yard kick for Adams and Mike Kitchner answering with a 36-yard boot for Oxford.
Line put the Wildcats up 10-3 late in the first quarter on a 55-yard run from scrimmage.
Adams tied the game in the second quarter with a 41-yard run from senior Adam Boike.
“We knew we had to win this game to stay (in the hunt for a playoff spot),” said Line. “We got it done. Everybody did their part.”
