Oakland’s Watterworth, Calhoun garner preseason Summit League recognition
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland’s Bethany Watterworth and Sharise Calhoun were both picked to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Summit League Team, which was announced on Thursday afternoon. Both players averaged double-figures last season, helping the OU women’s basketball team advance to The Summit League Championship game for a fourth time in six years.
Watterworth, a 5-foot-11-inch guard from Lake Orion, Mich. who was chosen as a first-team presason pick, was the second leading scorer in The Summit League last season at 17.8 points per-game. She has been an All-Summit League selection in each of her first two years at OU. Watterworth shot 45.1 percent from the field and reached double-digits in 31 games as a sophomore. She also led Oakland in assists (3.6) and was second on the team in rebounds (6.8).
Calhoun, a 5-foot-5-inch guard from Toledo, Ohio, who was selected to the preseason second team in the conference, was the second leading scorer for OU last winter averaging 12.8 points per game. She was second on the team in assists (2.7) and shot 83.7 percent from the free-throw line, which ranked 45th best in the NCAA. Calhoun was an All-Summit League honorable mention selection and was named to The Summit League All-Tournament Team.
The Golden Grizzlies come into the 2011-12 season full of confidence after their run to the league championship game last season, which culminated in the team’s third 20-win season in the last four years. Oakland tips off the season on Nov. 13 at George Mason.
