Holly ties for 17th at D-2 tennis finals
KALAMAZOO — Midland Dow racked up 31 points Saturday and easily outdistanced the field to win the Lower Peninsula Division 2 boys tennis state title at Kalamazoo College.
The Chargers won by 12 points, with Grand Rapids Hills Forest Hills Central earning second with 19 points. Bloomfield Hills Andover and Portage Central tied for third with 18 points, while Okemos was fifth with 17. Birmingham Groves (16), North Farmington (16), Battle Creek Lakeview (15), Traverse City Central (9) and Birmingham Seaholm (8) rounded out the top 10.
Andover, Groves, North Farmington and Seaholm all hail from the same conference, the OAA Red Division. Four other league members placed in the top 15 in Division 1.
Locally, Holly finished in a five-way title for 17th place with two points, sharing that position with Allen Park, Grosse Pointe North, Lansing Eastern and Wyandotte Roosevelt. Ortonville Brandon tied East Detroit for 22nd place with one point.
Kalamazoo Loy Norrix’s Davis Crocker defeated Tyler Richmond of Portage Central, 6-2, 6-3, in the finals at No.1 singles.
Spencer Navarre of Brandon picked up his team’s sole point, downing Andover’s Evan Chen in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, in the first round of No. 1 singles. He lost in the second round to Lansing Eastern’s Lioyikane Mavoungou, 7-5, 6-1.
Holly’s points came from the No. 3 doubles tandem of Craig Richards and Parker Rowse, who advanced with a first-round bye and advanced to the quarterfinals with a second round victory over East Detroit’s Alexander Koerber and Vidal Thomas-Sanchez, 6-2, 6-2.
In the quarterfinals, Richards and Prowse were knocked out by Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central’s Joey McClure and Greg Andrews, 6-2, 6-1.
