Rochester College nets Corcordia tournament title
ANN ARBOR —Rochester College’s women’s volleyball team has cracked the code for winning volleyball tournaments as they went on to win their fourth tournament of the season Saturday at Concordia College.
With another tournament championship title in hand, the Warriors are looking to notch the No. 1 spot in the USCAA national rankings.
The Lady Warriors opened first round play with a victory over tournament host Concordia University (25-21, 28-26, 16-25, 25-21). The Lady Warriors suffered a loss at the hands of Cincinnati Christian University (18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 9-15) in the second round.
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Warriors came out fired up in day two of competition with a round three sweep over Grace Bible College (25-2, 25-12, 25-9).
With the third round victory, the Lady Warriors earned a spot in the championship to face the Cardinals of Concordia University for a second time in two days. After a slow start in the first set loss, head coach Dave Crump rallied his troops to a 25-23 second-set victory.
The Cardinals showed some fire in set three with a 25-22 victory to put the CU one win away from a championship. Set four featured a battle with both teams going back and forth. The Lady Warriors prevailed forcing a fifth set. Again, both teams went at each other with the Lady Warriors coming out on top 16-14, earning the championship trophy.
Senior Katelyn Cosio (Grosse Pointe Woods / New Baltimore Anchor Bay) led the way for the Warriors with 33 kills. Junior Emily Serrano (Jenison) chipped in 30 kills, while junior Emily Rajterr (Troy Athens) had 104 digs and junior Niki MxcKerracher (Goodrich) had 17 blocks and 24 kills.
For their efforts, Serrano, Cosio, and freshman Layne Molosky (Columbiaville / North Branch) earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
Coach Crump was more than pleased with his team’s performance.
“It was great to win our fourth tournament of the season. Our play was a little up and down throughout the weekend,” said Crump. “We played really hard against Concordia to start the tournament and then came out flat against Cincinnati Christian University. The team knew they had let one slip and came out Saturday morning fired up against Grace Bible College.
“The final match of the day was a hard fought one,” continued Crump. “It was back and forth with Concordia in the championship match and in the fifth set, Concordia was up 8-3 at the switch. We have had several matches this year where we came from behind to win matches. It is great for the mental toughness knowing you can come back. I would prefer for us to learn to play from the front.”
