WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bethany Watterworth joined some elite company Tuesday night.

The 6-foot junior forward from Oakland University eclipsed the 1,000 points barrier in only her second game of her junior campaign in helping the visiting Golden Grizzlies upend American at Bender Arena, joining over 30 players in OU’s history to reach the milestone.

“I wasn’t concentrating on getting to 1000, I was just focused on us getting our first win tonight,” said Watterworth of Lake Orion. “It was my teammates who made it happen tonight with their great passing. Brittany Carnago had six assists and, as a team, we had 23 assists on 32 baskets. That’s Oakland basketball.”

Watterworth, a returning All-Summit League First Team selection, was an unstoppable force for Oakland (1-1), as she finished with a game-high 32 points, also matching a career high. She thrived on a night where OU shot 59.3 percent (32-for-54) from the floor.

Watterworth came into the contest against American with 995 career points. She finished the career night by going 15-for-25 from the floor to go along with five assists with three rebounds and two steals to give her 1,027 career points with nearly two full seasons to go.

Alexis Dobbs had a fine all-around game for American with 16 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals to lead American. Stephanie Anya added 11 points and seven rebounds and Lisa Strack added nine points and seven boards for the Eagles, who shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the floor.

American (1-2) held a pair of six-point leads in the first half before Oakland rallied to tie the score at 30-30 at the half. Oakland outscored American 38-32 in the second half.

The Golden Grizzlies played their second game without the services of senior guard Sharise Calhoun, who sat out with an undisclosed injury. Oakland’s 11-player rotation more than compensated for her absence.

“It was fun tonight,” said Oakland coach Beckie Francis. “Everyone contributed and it showed with us shooting as well as we did. Getting 50 points in the paint showed how well we were sharing the ball.”

American took a 37-32 lead early in the second half before OU responded with a 10-0 run to go up 42-37. Oakland stopped the Eagles on eight consecutive possessions and kept American at bay the rest of the way.

Oakland’s biggest lead was 54-45 with 9:44 to play on a free throw by Watterworth. American was able to cut the deficit down to three points on four separate occasions after that point, but could not close the gap down any further.

Zakiya Minifee added 13 points and five rebounds and Brittany Carnago chipped in with 10 points, six assists and five rebounds for Oakland, which landed only six of 11 active players into the scoring column. Victoria Lipscomb scored six points with a team-high six rebounds for OU, which held the lead the final 15:56 of the contest.

Oakland returns to the court on Thursday against neighboring Rochester College in the home opener at 6:30 p.m.
