ROCHESTER – Sharise Calhoun spent the first few games on the season sidelined with an ankle injury. Now back in the lineup, the Oakland University senior guard has made a huge difference.

Calhoun was back at it again Sunday afternoon.

Calhoun’s half-court shot at the buzzer propelled the Oakland women’s basketball team to a 48-45 win over Illinois-Chicago at the Athletics Center O’rena. Brittany Carnago was one rebound shy of a triple-double and led the Golden Grizzlies with 14 points, 11 blocks and nine rebounds.

“We actually practice (last-second shots),” said Oakland coach Beckie Francis. “I really want to complement our two seniors, Brittany Carnago and Sharise Calhoun, who really stepped up tonight with both their leadership and their performance on the floor.”

After Taylor Foulks hit a jumper with 3.4 seconds left to tie the game at 45, Calhoun got the ball on the inbounds play and fired off a shot from just behind the half-court line to win the game. It was the first 3-pointer of the season for Calhoun, who finished with seven points.

Carnago’s season-high 11 blocks led an OU defense that held UIC to just 34.6 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers. The Golden Grizzlies (5-4) shot 34 percent from the field, but did hit five 3-pointers, including back-to-back 3s by Liz Hamlet in the second half.

Oakland led 27-19 at the half, an 11-0 run to start the second half, gave UIC (4-4) a three-point lead on a basket by Jasmine Bailey. Neither team led by more than three points in the second half.

Bailey led the Flames with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Foulks added 12 points. Bailey came into the game averaging 22.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per-game and was the leading scorer in the Horizon League.

Oakland’s leading scorer Bethany Watterworth hit a 3-pointer on her first shot of the game, but left immediately after with an injury. She is currently the second-leading scorer in The Summit League.

Oakland returns to action on Dec. 20 with a game at No. 12 Purdue, which will tipoff at 1 p.m.
