Oakland’s Zakiya Minifee suffers season-ending injury

| January 11, 2012 | Comments (1)

ROCHESTER HILLS Zakiya Minifee will miss the remainder of the Oakland women’s basketball season, announced head coach Beckie Francis on Tuesday. Minifee suffered a lower body injury during Oakland’s game against IUPUI and, after medical evaluation, was deemed unable to return for the remainder of the 2011-12 season.

“It’s a big blow to lose a player with Zakiya’s skills,” said Francis. “We are a team and in her absence we will rely on other players to step up and fill her void on the court.”

Minifee was the team’s second leading scorer with 8.5 points per-game and led OU with an average of 7.5 rebounds per-game, before the IUPUI game. She was also leading Oakland with 31 steals and was second on the team in assists.

“Although her injury will prevent her from contributing during the games, she will still be a big part of our team” said Francis. “She will continue to attend practices and will contribute in the classroom where we continue to focus on succeeding together as a team.”

The Golden Grizzlies resume play Saturday on the road at IPFW. The game will tipoff at 4:30 p.m. at War Memorial Coliseum .
