MONDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lake Orion rolls Lapeer East; Oxford topples Mott; Brandon falls to Swartz Creek
LAKE ORION — Due to icy roads, Lake Orion may have not had school Monday morning. Freezing rain the night before took care of that.
Yet on Monday night, Lake Orion took Lapeer East to school and froze the Eagles dead in their tracks, posting a lopsided 64-36 non-conference boys basketball victory.
Lake Orion opened up with a 29-1 surge and never looked back in grounding the Eagles in this non-league boys basketball contest. By the half, Lake Orion was in complete control with a 43-21 lead.
Chaz Miller scored a season-high 19 points to pace the Dragons (7-4), who have already surpassed last year’s 4-17 mark. Connor Stalions added 11 points and John McCarty scored eight for Lake Orion, which held a 21-15 edge in the second half.
The Dragons sent 11 players into the scoring column.
Kyle Rachwell scored 11 for Lapeer East (1-12).
OXFORD 66, WATERFORD KETTERING 56: Oxford built a 13-point cushion by the half and held on for the non-league victory over the Captains.
Oxford led 15-12 after the first quarter and 38-25 by the half. Kettering held a 31-28 edge in the second half.
Michael Kitchner scored 18 with eight rebounds to lead Oxford. Mark Hazelwood added 18 points and six assists and Jacques Toussaint recorded 14 points and four steals for the Wildcats (7-4).
Maurice Scott scored 21 points with 10 rebounds and Dunkan Chizek added 13 points for the Captains (0-9).
“We’ competed better than we did in our los to (Birmingham) Groves the other night, but we still have to keep going forward,”: said Oxford coach Paul Marfia. “We have a big game coming up Thursday against (Bloomfield Hills) Lahser. They were picked to win the OAA Blue. If we can win this game, we can keep ourselves in the league race.”
SWARTZ CREEK 70, ORTONVILLE BRANDON 52: Swartz Creek remained in the Flint Metro League title chase with Fenton and Holly with this 18-point road win Monday at Brandon.
J. D. Tisdale (19 points), Jared Jones (15 points) and Max Cummings (13 points) all reached double figures for the Dragons (10-2, 9-2), who trailed 23-2 at the half but outscored the Blackhawks, 28-10 in the third quarter to regain the lead.
And Cody Feltner both scored 10 for Brandon Quinton Cook (4-8, 4-7).
