Troy escapes upstart Kettering, eyes Pontiac

TROY — All hopes of a Troy-Pontiac showdown Wednesday were about to disappear at the hands of the most unlikely opponent.
But a few big plays from James Young, and Troy escaped with a sloppy effort to advance.
Troy eventually withstood pesky Waterford Kettering’s upset bid Monday night at Troy Athens and walked off the court with a less-than-inspiring 77-67 victory in a Class A district opener.
“A very weak effort, very disinterested,” Troy coach Gary Fralick said. “We’re lucky to get away with it tonight. We’ll be done if we do it again.”
James Young led an outstanding third quarter, where Troy outscored Kettering 32-14 and finished with 28 points to lead Troy (16-5).
Kettering jumped out to a 36-25 lead with two minutes to go in the second quarter, but then Troy finished the half with three quick buckets.
The Colts continued the surge in the third quarter, starting off with a 20-4 run. It was punctuated by Young’s alley-oop dunk from junior point guard Zak Noor, plus Young’s 3-pointer and another dunk.
Still, Kettering (3-18) would not die.
The Captains trimmed the lead from 13 down to eight with a minute left, but Troy squeaked out a victory. The third quarter was the only one in which Troy outscored Kettering.
Behind the hot hand of Maurice Scott, Kettering got on an roll early, hitting 4-of-5 from outside the arc in the first quarter. The Captains maintained that lead the rest of the half and into the third quarter before Young went off.
“I looked at my seniors and I didn’t want everybody to go home down like last year,” said Young, whose team was knocked out in the district semifinals last season and last won a district in 2009.
Scott scored 26 points to lead Kettering. Junior Justin Santana added 18 points and senior Duncan Chizek twined 14 points for the Captains.
Troy faces Pontiac Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a district semifinal. The final is Friday at 7 p.m.
Noor added 20 points and eight assists for Troy, while Danny Wunderlich scored 12 for the Colts.
