COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Oakland seniors shine on Senior Day in sweep of Windsor
ROCHESTER HILLS — Senior Leah DiCristofaro blasted a three-run home run, senior Colleen Zimmerman drove in two runs and senior Brittany Doyle threw a complete game as the OU seniors shined on Senior Day for the Oakland softball team, beating Western Ontario, 9-3 and 10-1, Tuesday afternoon at the OU Softball Field.
“These were two quality wins for our team and a great way to send out our four seniors,” said head coach LaDonia Hughes. “Both pitchers threw very well today and it was a total team win. We look forward to using the momentum from the end of the season towards the beginning of next season.”
In the first game, Erin Galloway, Jackie Kisman and Dani Dulberg all had multi-hit games as the OU (10-38) offense scored nine runs on 12 hits. Oakland jumped on the scoreboard first as Dulberg and Morgan Muron led the charge with RBI singles as the Golden Grizzlies scored four runs in the opening inning.
The Mustangs (30-3) got one run back on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, but the Golden Grizzlies answered with three runs in the fourth inning, as DiCristofaro and Abbie Richardson drove in runs and DiCristofaro would later score after Chelsea Carena was caught stealing to make the score 7-1.
UWO fought back in the fifth inning as Shannon Davidson drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Taylor Murray hit a sacrifice fly to cut the Oakland lead to 7-3. Oakland put the game away in the sixth inning as Kisman was able to score on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt and Megan McQueen drove in a run scoring Dulberg from third base for the final score of 9-3.
Richardson (4-11) earned the victory throwing 7.0 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out eight batters.
In the nightcap, Kisman finished 3-for-3, while DiCristofaro and Brittany Prior both added a pair of hits as Oakland out hit the Mustangs 11-4. The Golden Grizzlies scored early as DiCristofaro hit an RBI-single and Prior ripped an RBI-double for three runs in the first inning.
After Western Ontario scored a run in the top of the third, Oakland erupted with a five-run inning in the bottom half of the inning. DiCristofaro blasted a three-run home run over the right-field fence for her fourth RBI of the game and Zimmerman hit a two-RBI triple to right-center field to push the lead to 8-1.
In the fifth inning, Doyle led off with a walk, followed by a Zimmerman base-on-balls. Galloway would drive both runners in with a double to right-center field for the 10-1 win in the final game of the season.
Doyle (6-17) earned the victory, throwing a complete game, giving up one earned run and striking out six UWO batters.
