COLLEGE BASEBALL: Ryan ties record in Oakland’s loss to Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. – Tim Ryan tied the career stolen base record, but Oakland lost, 6-0, to Northwestern on Wednesday at Rocky Miller Park.
Ryan also had three hits to lead the Golden Grizzlies’ offensive effort.
“While I’m disappointed with the loss, I thought we had a lot of guys throw well today,” said Oakland head coach John Musachio. “Our guys gave a great effort and hit some balls hard, but at people. We were beaten today, but it wasn’t for lack of effort.”
Ryan set the record for OU (18-26) by stealing third on a dropped third strike in the third inning. The attempt to throw out Ryan, who was running on the pitch, allowed Jake Morton to reach safely and avoid the third out in the inning. The Golden Grizzlies followed up with an attempted double steal, which would have given Ryan the record outright, but he was thrown out at home on the play.
The 23 stolen bases by Ryan this season are the fourth most in Oakland history for a single season. It also gives him 80 for his career, which is tied with Mike Armstrong for the most in program history.
OU threw eight pitchers and managed to hold the Northwestern scoreless in all but two innings. The only two runs for the Wildcats came from a pair of bases-loaded doubles in the first and seventh innings respectively. NU outhit Oakland 8-4.
Oakland starter Chris Van Dyke (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Nick Friar (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Northwestern.
The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for Oakland and marked the first time the team had been shutout this season.
