COLLEGE TRACK: Oakland’s Micah Jones wins Summit League long jump title

FARGO, N.D. — Micah Jones won the long jump event, becoming the first women’s individual champion in school history, and Serena San Cartier broke the school record in the 100-meter hurdles as the Oakland men’s and women’s track and field teams competed on day two of The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Ellig Sports Complex on Friday.

“Watching Micah (Jones) win our first ever individual title was quite a thrill,” said Oakland head coach Paul Rice. “She has been a real anchor for us in the jumps for four years and it’s great to see her go out as a senior with that title.”

Jones became the first women’s individual champion for the Golden Grizzlies by setting the school record in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 5.25 inches. She is the first individual champion in either indoor or outdoor track and field in Oakland history.

The women are in seventh place with 17.5 points, trailing leader North Dakota State with 90 points and South Dakota with 62 points. The men are in eighth place with eight points, trailing leader North Dakota State with 85 points and Southern Utah with 53 points.

San Cartier finished sixth in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles by breaking her own school record with a time of 14.45.  Jennifer Lane earned a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 4.5 inches, followed by Jones who finished tied for sixth with a jump of 5 feet, 4.5 inches.  Krystal Herron earned an eighth-place finish in the heptathlon with a final score of 1,773 points.

On the men’s side, Andrew Stebbins finished fourth in the shot put with a final throw of 53 feet, 7 inches.  Kyle Wilson and Niklas Rippon both earned spots in tomorrow’s finals as Wilson finished fifth in the prelims of the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.14 and Rippon finished fifth in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.10.

“We have some things to looks forward to tomorrow with Kyle (Wilson), Niklas (Rippon) and Serena (San Cartier) in the finals of their events,” added Rice.
