COLLEGE SOCCER: Michigan puts the clamps down on Oakland
ANN ARBOR— This round goes to the University of Michigan.
Shawn Claud Lawson had three shots on goal for Oakland in a 1-0 loss at Michigan) on Tuesday at the U-M Soccer Stadium It was only the second time that the Golden Grizzlies have been shutout this season.
“We’re not happy with the loss,” said Oakland head coach Eric Pogue. “We didn’t win today and we’re not happy about it. We have to refocus our goals to concentrate on Kansas City coming in on the weekend.”
Oakland (8-4-0) threatened with the very first shot of the game, a long-range volley from Lawson that forced a good save from Adam Grinwis. Lawson also had a breakaway chance late in the first half, but his first touch was long and his shot was smothered by the on-rushing Grinwis.
The goal for Michigan came in the 14th minute of play from Colin MCatee. T.J. Roehn layed the ball off to Mcatee, whose shot went just under the arm of Oakland goalkeeper Scott Messer.
In the second half, OU continued to put on the pressure and Jeff Cheslik came close to leveling the score, but his header flew just over the bar. Matt Dudley nearly scored in the final minute, but Grinwis to came off his line well and made the save after missed touch.
Messer finished the match with five saves for Oakland including a pair of diving stops late to keep the match close. Grinwis earned his second shutout of the season by making four saves.
The Golden Grizzlies return to action on Saturday when they host Kansas City at the OU Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
