GIRLS VOLLEYBALL DISTRICTS: Oakland Christian avenges Bishop Foley; Troy Athens, Notre Dame Prep soar into finals

MADISON HEIGHTS — Revenging a loss is always sweet, especially when it comes in the postseason.

Auburn Hills Oakland Christian avenged such a defeat Wednesday at Madison Heights Bishop Foley, site of a pair of Class C district semifinals.

The Lancers captured a 3-1 over the host Ventures, who defeated Oakland Christian in a five-game thriller last season in the district finals. That was the Lancers’ first season in Class C after decades in Class D.

Foley won the first game 25-22, while Oakland Christian reeled off three straight games, 25-10, 25-20, 25-16, to advance to the district finals Friday at 7 p.m.

The Lancers will face Bloomfield Hills Sacred Heart in the title match, after the Gazelles downed Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest.

The Lancers dominated the second game with a 25-10 win and cruised to wins in the final two games to take a four-game win over the host Ventures, 22-25, 25-10, 25-20 and 25-16.

Becky VanSloten had a 30 kills and three blocks to pace Oakland Christian. Erin Washington added 33 assists and Marcella Compeau followed with 30 digs for the Lancers.

Emma Wonsil had 11 kills for Bishop Foley.

MORE CLASS C

BLOOMFIELD HILLS SACRED HEART 25-25-25, ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 15-12-22: Sacred Heart advanced to Friday’s district finals with this sweep of the Crusaders at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

Analisa Cook collected 15 digs and 12 kills for Sacred Heart, while Haley Seaman added six kills and six blocks.

Emily Woodfin collected five kills and eight digs and Katie Rasmussen supplied 10 digs for Northwest.

CLASS A

TROY ATHENS 25-23-26-25, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 14-25-24-23: The district host Red Hawks earned a Friday date with rival Troy with this four-set victory over Avondale.

Rachel Martens led the Red Hawks with 24 digs defensively. Lauren Taylor slammed nine kills, Michelle Donato added eight kills and Erica Siisnets provided seven blocks and six kills for Athens.

CLASS B

PONTIAC NOTRE DAME PREP 25-25-25, BLOOMFIELD HILLS CRANBROOK KINGSWOOD 22-8-13: Notre Dame Prep came one win from defending its district championship with this three-game sweep Wednesday at Clawson.

Dani McCormick led the fighting Irish with 22 kills and three aces. Katherine Carlson added 11 kills and Hannah Strat tallied 26 digs for NDP (49-9-4).

The Irish will play Friday at 7 p.m. in the district finals for the 16th straight season and will face Birmingham Detroit Country Day.
