GIRLS VOLLEYBALL REGIONALS: Notre Dame Prep cruises into regional finals
PONTIAC — For the ninth time, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep will play for a regional championship in girls volleyball.
The state-ranked Fighting Irish rolled past Macomb Lutheran North, 3-0, Tuesday in a Class B regional semifinal on its home court to set up a date Thursday in the regional finals. NDP posted scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-11 to dust away the Mustangs in less than an hour.
The Irish (51-9-4), who are one win away from their sixth regional crown in nine trips, dominated on the serve and rarely allowed Lutheran North much opportunity to steal a game.
The Irish were led by their outside hitters, as sophomore Katherine Carlson finished 33-for-35 attacking seven kills, 9-for-9 serving with two aces and four service points, and junior Dani McCormick, who finished 28-for-31 with 11 kills and two blocks while serving 17-for-19 with five aces and 15 points.
Defensively, junior Hannah Strat (20 digs), sophomore Bella Bucchi (16 digs) and senior Haley Delvecchio (15 digs) once again put on a solid performance. Sophomore setter Ashley Knutson dished out 15 assists, while sophomore Hannah Antosz added 10 assists of her own.
Regional host Notre Dame Prep, unranked despite 51 wins, will face Warren Fitzgerald at 7 p.m. Thursday for a right to advance to the Elite Eight.
