GIRLS BASKETBALL: Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes wins fifth straight regional crown
LANSING — State tournament experience can go a long ways in carry a team deep into the postseason. Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes has plenty of it.
That could be one of the reasons why the Class D fifth-ranked Lakers are still alive in the postseason.
Our Lady of the Lakes rolled over second-ranked Lansing Christian Thursday on the Pilgrims’ home floor, posting a 40-26 victory to win a fifth straight regional championship trophy.
The Lakers’ defense was just suffocating, as WOLL raced out to a 12-4 after the first quarter and 22-10 after the first quarter. Lansing Christian was held to single digit scoring in each of the three quarters.
A 9-6spurt in the third quarter gave Our Lady of the Lakes a31-16 cushion entering the final frame, the only quarter where Lansing Christian held the upper hand. The Pilgrims closed with a 10-9 run to make the final a 14-point difference.
Lexie Robak led three Lakers in double figures with 14 points. Ava Doetsch added 11 points and Anna Robb scored 10 for WOLL, which finished 13-for-16 from the foul line and allowed the Pilgrims to shoot only two free throws.
Elizabeth Perkins scored a game-high 18 points for Lansing Christian, although four other Pilgrims combined for only eight points. Lansing Christian did not sink a single three-pointer.
WOLL (20-4) advances to the state quarterfinals next Tuesday at Waterford Mott, where they will face Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
