WEST BLOOMFIELD — At the beginning of the season, West Bloomfield was an afterthought of making the 2013 postseason. Now, the Lakers are still mathematically in the hunt.

West Bloomfield picked up a major upset Friday, stunning state-ranked Rochester Stoney Creek, 31-26, in a key OAA Red Division football contest.

The loss takes Stoney Creek (5-2, 4-2) out of the running for a league championship, while the win for West Bloomfield (4-3, 3-3) keeps its playoffs hopes alive, as the Lakers moved into a tie for fourth place with Rochester in the eight-school league.

West Bloomfield picked off two passes in the fourth quarter, coming by the hands of Brighton Unaegbu and Curtis Matthews, including one in the end zone inside 10 seconds to seal the upset bid.

Trailing 17-14 at the half, West Bloomfield opened the half with a 17-0 run, as Robert Powell again went to the air to find Trishton Jackson for a 25-yard scoring pass play, while Connor Genrich connected from 30 yards and Michael King scored on a 11-yard run for which proved to be a 31-17 lead the Lakers would not relinquish.

Stoney Creek picked up a 1-yard touchdown run by Sean Scullen and recorded a safety to pull to within 31-26. The Cougars failed to convert down the stretch.

Alex Schnurr caught a 40-yard dart from Justin Allor (267 passing yards) that gave Stoney Creek an early advantage.

Jackson hauled in a 61-yard toss from Powell, while Powell also connected with Chris Watkins on a 71-yard bomb for a 14-7 lead. Powell had 250 passing yards for West Bloomfield.

Joe Cox returned an interception 21 yards for another score and Schnurr booted a 26-yard field goal for aid the Cougars’17-14 halftime lead.
