GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Athens cruises past Pontiac; Avondale outlasts Troy

TROY — Troy Athens had little resistance with Pontiac Wednesday, and the Red Hawks cruised into Thursday’s Class A district finals.

Athens posted a 25-6, 25-3 and 25-5 victory over the Phoenix at Troy High School and will face Auburn Hills Avondale in the Class A district finals.

Haley Zemmer had nine kills, three blocks and one ace to lead the Red Hawks.

Michelle Donato added four kills, seven aces and 12 service points and Alexis Van Hoef had six kills, five blocks and three service points for Athens (38-28-0).

AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 25-15-25-27, TROY 19-25-19-25: Avondale fought off host Troy Wednesday to advance to the district finals with this four-set victory over the host Colts.

Colleen Mayer led Avondale (17-18-1) with 15 kills. Emma Ahern added 13 kills and 13 digs, Haley Bittinger chipped in with 10 kills and Jessica Stefanski had 23 digs for the Yellowjackets.
