GIRLS VOLLEBALL: Notre Dame Prep cruises to seventh regional crown
PONTIAC — After losing in the Class B regional finals the past two seasons, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep’s girls volleyball team is taking another step this year.
The Fighting Irish, ranked No. 1 in the state, captured its regional crown in five years and seventh overall by sweeping visiting Hazel Park in straight sets Thursday, 25-8, 25-6 and 25-12 in the regional championship match. The win earned NDP its seventh regional title in 20 years.
Collectively, NDP crushed 49 kills on the night to deflate the Vikings, who were making their first appearance in the regional finals in 22 years. Katherine Carlson Carlson had 15 kills and nine service points to lead the way.
Dani McCormick added nine kills, Jenna Sassack added eight kills, Bella Bucchi served up 17 service points and Emma Kowalkowski added 10 service points for the Irish.
Notre Dame Prep (59-2-1) will host North Branch in the state quarterfinals Tuesday at 7 p.m. North Branch, a state powerhouse during the past two decades, ousted the Irish in last year’s state tournament.
