GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Top-ranked Notre Dame Prep cruises into regional finals
MARYSVILLE —Top-ranked Pontiac Notre Dame Prep advanced to Sweet 16 round of the Class B state tournament for the fourth straight year by virtue of a 25-9, 25-4, 25-5 sweep Tuesday over Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy in the regional semifinals at Marysville.
The Fighting Irish served up a season-best 32 aces, as they kept the Eagles offense out of system for most of the evening. Bella Bucchi led the serving assault with 28 points and 10 aces, followed by Katherine Carlson’s 11 points and nine aces. Emma Kowalkowski added 10 points of her own with seven aces while she added seven digs.
Carlson also had 14 kills in 16 attempts and Erica Schwegman had six kills in 10 attempts for NDP (55-5-0). In all 9 different players had kills for the balanced Irish attack.
The Irish will face longtime rival Marysville in the regional finals Thursday. Marysville defeated Armada 3-1 in Tuesday’s second semifinal.
“I was pleased with how the Irish spread the offense around,” said NDP coach Coach Wroubel. “While we served a lot of aces today, we also served a lot of balls into the net. We will have to eliminate those types of unforced errors on Thursday. We also have to limit the number of free balls. Marysville has an All American (Ali Bastianelli) who can absolutely bring it.”
