DIVISION 4

DETROIT — Josh Steffes is known as one of Michigan’s top defensive players on the soccer pitch. The talented D-I recruit recently was named All-State Dream Team as a central defender after leading Grand Rapids Catholic Central to the Division 3 state championship.

On the football field, Steffes is a quality kicker and his four points on Friday proved to be crucial in fifth-ranked Catholic Central’s 10-7 victory over top-ranked Birmingham Detroit Country Day in the Division 4 football state finals at Ford Field.

Steffes booted a 31-yard field goal with 1:18 left in the first quarter, than converted an extra point following a touchdown with 11:11 remaining in the fourth stanza to cap the scoring.

Michael Brown hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass from the arm of Jack Bowen for the go-ahead six points for Catholic Central (13-1).

The Cougars were held to only 60 yards of offense.

Country Day took the lead with 4:54 remaining in the second quarter when Roy McCree picked off a pass and returned the interception 82 yards for the score. Alec Jabara’s extra point was the last time DCD reached the scoring column.

Bowen only finished 4-for-10 passing for 52 yards, while the Cougars had only eight rushing yards.

Steve Mann was 9-for-15 passing for 87 yards for DCD, which could not muster any offensive points. Kolin Demans had five catches for 42 yards. The Yellowjackets also attempted 39 rushing attempts but were held to only plus-eight yards.football - tackle
