BOYS SOCCER: Holly rolls past Corunna for first Flint Metro League win
CORUNNA — Wins have been hard to come by for Holly on the soccer pitch during this rebuilding season.
One couldn’t tell Wednesday night.
Corunna could not withstand Holly’s constant pressure, and the Bronchos walked away with a 7-0 shutout of the Cavaliers in Flint Metro League play.
Holly (2-11-0, 1-9-0) scored all seven goals in the first half and recorded its first road and conference win in the process. The Bronchos’ other win came back on Sept. 12 in the Flint Carman-Ainsworth Cavaliers Classic when they posted a 2-1 victory over Clio in the consolation match of the tourney.
Kyle Sherrow notched the natural hat trick and Jayden McDougal and Joe Loeffler both added two goals in the rout.
McDougal’s strike only 30 seconds into the contest set the tone, and Holly dominated from start to finish in taking a 1-0 lead in the first minute.
McDougal made it a 2-0 cushion in the 14th minute when he deposited Nick Gramer’s pass into the net and the Broncos did not look back, peppering Corunna’s net all night.
Sherrow pushed the lead to 3-0 one minute later when he scored off a breakaway feed from Austin Jacopec. The same duo scored again the 16th minute when Sherrow volleyed home a cornerkick from Jacopec for the 4-0 lead, while Sherrow notched his hat trick in the first half, corralling a punt from Holly goalkeeper Tevin Landwerlen near midfield and weaving through traffic before banging home his shot inside the box.
Loeffler scored twice in the final five minutes in the half. The first was set up by Jan Holleman, while the second came off a steal and Loeffler got behind the Corunna defense before depositing his shot into the goal on a breakaway.
“We began to dial back the intensity on goal and focus more on honing in our movement and passing. We also wanted to respect our hosts as this was their senior night,” offered Holly coach Matt Sherrow. “We had no intention of ending the game with a mercy during the first half.
“With a couple good games coming up and a district game a week away, we decided at halftime that we wanted the opportunity to sharpen our skills,” continued Sherrow. “Earning a mercy of the Cavaliers and ending the game early was of no benefit to the team. We instead decided to focus on build-up from the back and sound passing and movement to get ourselves into the Cavaliers’ half, playing it backwards as much as we were going forward. Despite numerous opportunities through our build-up, instead of shooting, our strikers would turn back and play a pass to one of our midfielders. We were able to involve the entire team in passing the ball around the field, creating opportunities. On several occasions we tried getting a particular player an opportunity on goal, but otherwise were more focused on letting the game play out.”
