GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Notre Dame Prep downs Country Day to reach fifth straight Final Four
PORT HURON — Pontiac Notre Dame Prep is back in its usual spot in the Division 2 state semifinals.
The top-ranked Fighting Irish swept Birmingham Detroit Country Day 3-0 Tuesday in a Division 2 state quarterfinals match at St. Clair Community College.
Notre Dame Prep (62-1-0) will take on No. 2 Grand Rapids Christian at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena. It marks NDP’s fifth straight appearance in the Division 2 Final Four (formally Class B) and 11th overall in 15 years.
Miss Volleyball finalist Aly Borellis — out for a month with a hand injury — returned to the lineup to help give the Irish a boost. Borellis collected 23 assists and 21 kills to lead the Irish. Sophia Sudzina added 11 kills and Bianca Giglio hammered 16 kills with three blocks.
Defensive stalwart Josie Bloom, also a Miss Volleyball finalist, had 32 serve receptions without an error. Bloom added 19 service points — five which fell to the floor via an ace.
Ally Berent added 13 receptions, nine digs and six service points. Margo Sudzina collected 20 assists and six service points.
