WATERFORD — Birmingham Seaholm ended a 40-plus-year drought last February, winning its first Oakland County Boys Swimming and Diving Championship since the 1960s despite annually being a state powerhouse.
The Maples will again be expected one of the top teams at this year’s Oakland County Championships, although the Maples will be hard-pressed to repeat.
“It’s going to be a real challenge to defend our title,” admitted Seaholm coach Tom Wyllie. “I feel we are going to be right there. But (Birmingham) Groves and (Birmingham Brother Rice are both really good this year, plus the balance of all of the other good teams in the county will make it interesting.”
Over 35 schools will send representatives to the county met this season, which will be held at Waterford Mott High School. Diving competition will be held Friday at 6 p.m., while the finals are slated for 11 a.m. Saturday.
Seldom does the top five not include Seaholm, Groves and Brother Rice, as the meet often turns into the Birmingham Area Invitational at the top tier.
Seaholm collected 332 points to lead the talent-laden field last year. Groves followed in second with 257.5 points and Novi was third at 173 points. Brother Rice (160), Clarkston (149), Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (144), Lake Orion (143.5), South Lyon Unified (131), White Lake Lakeland (128) and Novi Detroit Catholic Central (87.5) in last year’s top 10.
Based on seeded times and efforts, Groves would score 308 points, followed by Seaholm 259 and Brother Rice 230.
“Groves is the favorite by close to 50 points and Brother Rice is only 29 points behind us. That’s just on paper and it never works out like that,” noted Wyllie. “There are some awfully good swimmers in Oakland County. We’re going to have to have our best day in order to have a chance.
“This meet is a great barometer at this point of the season to see where everyone is at,” said Wyllie. “This is the first championship meet. The league meets are only a few weeks after that. And then the state meets. It’s coming up fast.”
In this week’s rankings, Brother Rice is third, Troy seventh and both Lake Orion and Catholic Central are tied for ninth in Division 1, while Farmington and Novi are listed as honorable mention.
Groves is the top-ranked team in Division 2, followed by Seaholm (third), North Farmington (10th) and Bloomfield Hills Andover (honorable mention).
Additionally in Division 3, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook (fourth), Bloomfield Hills Lahser (sixth) and Birmingham Detroit Country Day (ninth) are also in the state’s top 10, giving the county 12 schools currently gaining votes in the rankings.
