ROCHESTER HILLS — Rochester Adams has proven to be a model of consistency throughout the years in boys golf. The Highlanders added to that reputation Wednesday on Katke Cousins Golf Course.
Behind a play-six, count-four team score of 309, Adams won the final OAA Red Division league tournament of the season by six strokes. The tournament win gave the Highlanders the outright league championship and at least a share of the overall league title for the third year in a row.
Adams won the league title outright in 2010 and shared the crown with Lake Orion last season.
“It’s a credit to the kids,” offered Adams coach Dan Picot. “We’ve won a lot of league championships over the years and have been very successful. The kids work hard on their game and it pays off in the end. With all of the talented teams in our league and all of the talented players, it’s a nice accomplishment to win our league.”
Rochester finished second at 315, followed by Rochester Stoney Creek (320), Clarkston (320), Lake Orion (331) and Troy (334). In the final overall league standings combining league meets and league jamborees, Lake Orion was second behind Adams, while Stoney Creek, Troy, Rochester and Clarkston followed suit.
A total of 11 golfers in a field of 36 broke 80 on the day, led by medalist Spencer Lendzion of Stoney Creek. Lendzion carded a two-over round of 72 to lead the pack.
The Adams duo of Ben Van Orman and Brandon Borrows both shot 75 to finish second and both Jimmy Delnick of Clarkston and Eric Shyu of Rochester tied for fourth with rounds of 77. Four golfers tied for sixth overall, as Adams’ Eric Busa, Stoney Creek’s Richie Ingle, Lake Orion’s Griffin Beeler and Rochester’s Ludovic Clavette-Lapachelle all shot 78, while Rochester’s Mike Murri and Troy’s Christian Harnishfeger shot 79 to tie for 10th overall.
All six of Adams’ competitors shot between 75 and 83. Van Orman, Borrows, Busa and Jamie Stanton (81) wrapped up the Adams team total, while both Marcus Robinson (82 and Drew White (83) finished inside the top 20 but didn’t count towards the Highlanders’ total.
“We have been really consistent all year,” said Picot. “That has really helped us.”
The Highlanders are going to need it Friday, as the MHSAA district tournament will take place. Adams, along with four other OAA-Red teams, will be part of a loaded 12-school field at Bald Mountain Golf Course in Orion Township.
The top six schools, plus the top six finishers not on qualifying teams, advance to the regional round the following week.
“Our district is brutal. There are so many good teams that someone won’t go (to the regional),” offered Picot. “Beside us, we have Rochester, Stoney Creek, Lake Orion and Clarkston from our league. Grand Blanc is coming down, Oxford is tough and so is Fenton. You are going to have to play very good golf as a team just to make it out of our district. There are probably eight schools or so that have a chance to finish in the top six. It has to be one of the toughest districts in the state.
“The regional will be even tougher,” continued Picot. “You throw Davison and Traverse City West into the mix and your team will have to play exceptional to qualify for the state. It’s not an easy road for any of us.”
