Notre Dame Prep caps ‘bannerful’ weekend

PONTIAC — Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be a weekend to remember for the athletics program at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.
The Fighting Irish captured three district championships, one regional championship and two individual track and field individual state championships, what Notre Dame Prep Athletics Director Betty Wroubel called a “phenomenal couple of days.”
Thursday, May 31: NDP’s boys golf team captured a Division 3 district trophy, led by Aaron Knudston’s round of 71. That effort was good for medalist honors.
Friday, June 1: The Irish boys lacrosse team captured a Division 2 regional title, the school’s third straight, with an 11-2 over victory over Warren DeLaSalle.
Saturday, June 2: Notre Dame Prep’s girls soccer team ended Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s recent dominance at the district level. The Irish tackled the Yellowjackets, 1-0, in overtime on a goal by Taylor Timko, who later in the day competed in the Division 2 state track and field championships.
The Irish’s girls track and field finished seventh at Division 2 state finals. Sara Barron captured the 1,600 meters crown with new Division 2 record of 4:51.67 and followed that up with a repeat performance in winning the 800 meters (2:13.83).
The NDP 1,600 relay team also earned a third-place effort, as the unit of Barron, Timko, Sarah LewAllen and Candice Mack capped the meet with all-state honors.
Also on Saturday, the NDP softball team won its sixth straight district crown, defeating Bloomfield Hills Lahser 14-0 in five innings in the semifinals, while topping Country Day 11-1 in the finals. The Irish outscored their opponents 25-1 and only committed one error on the day.
The Irish (28-9) advance to the regional tournament at Richmond.
Finally on Saturday, the NDP girls tennis team had its best finish at the state finals after finishing its best season in history.
The Irish finished seventh at the Division4 finals, with Erin Moncreif runner-up at No. 4 singles and Maddie Riley and Gabby Bering runner up at No.4 doubles.
The team had a dual match record of 10-1 with its only loss coming from D-4 state champion Bloomfield Hills Academy Sacred Heart.
