FOOTBALL: Troy Defenders crush St. Wendelin
BERKLEY — It was a debut league game for Fostoria St. Wendelin Saturday in the Christian Football League of America. Troy Christian Leadership made sure it was not a warm welcome.
Troy, one of the original teams in the league which was known during its first four years at the Christian Football League of Michigan, rolled out to a 44-7 lead by the end of the first half and cruised to a lopsided 50-7 CFLA crossover win at Berkley High School.
Senior quarterback MacLane Essian was 3-for-3 passing but was good for 113 yards and a pair of touchdown passes in the rout. Essian added 55 rushing yards as part of a balanced attack for Troy, which had more than 300 total yards and forced four turnovers in the contest.
Troy (2-0) scored a pair of touchdowns in the opening four minutes to set the tone. Senior Emmanuel Swiggins scored on a 45-yard run on the Defenders’ first play of their first drive and the aforementioned Essian followed with an 11-yard run moments later to put Troy in control.
Swiggins recorded an interception and on the Defenders’ next drive and later caught an Essian pass from 34 yards out for a 21-0 advantage late in the first quarter, while Troy tacked on seven more points in the frame when Paul Hartwig returned another interception for 25 yards for paydirt.
Essian found Joe Schuster for a 46-yard heave that resulted in another touchdown. MacLane Essian picked off another Mohawks pass on text drive and tacked on more points when he handed off to sophomore brother Montana Essian, who scampered into the end zone for a 13-yard TD run to up the lad to 44-7.
In the fourth quarter, Cody Greenwell’s 61-yard dash capped the scoring for the Defenders.
Sophomore Zach Miller finished 7-for-18 passing for only 42 yards for St. Wendelin,located in Fosotira, Ohio, about 30 miles southeast of Toledo.
Brad Bushrow scored the sole touchdown for St. Wendelin when he picked off a pass at the goal line and returned it 100 yards for the score with 10 seconds left in the first quarter, which cut the deficit down to 28-7 entering the second period.
