ROCHESTER HILLS — This game had trap game written all over it.
Coming off an emotionally-filled victory over Rochester, Rochester Adams used a 23-7 run in the third quarter to pull away from Troy and post a 70-53 OAA crossover victory, keeping its perfect season alive despite lackluster first-half performance.
“This was a scary game for us. For one, Troy is not a bad team and they played us very close in the first half. Two, we were coming off that big win over Rochester on Friday, played in front of a packed house and this game was the day before exams and there was hardly anyone in the gym,” offered Adams coach John Hall. “I don’t think we played with some energy in the first half.
“We didn’t make any changes at the break,” continued Hall. “The kids decided to come out and just play.”
Akhemji Williams scored the nets for a game-high 26 points, including 14 points and four steals in the pivotal third quarter, to lead the Highlanders (8-0).
Zack Littleson added 18 points and Ben Limb followed with 10 points for the Highlanders.
Limb’s steady play has been a key contributor to one of the school’s best starts in program history, who made seven three-points and shot 11-for-16 from the foul line..
“He’s always played like that — steady,” praised Hall. “We need him to get in there, play defense, get rebounds and score on some of those putbacks and (close-range) shots. As long as he continues to do that, he’s going to be in there more often than not.
“Akhemji was also fantastic tonight, too,” continued Hall. “He played a great game. This was one of those nights when he just took over in the third quarter. He was a big part of our run.”
Troy led 11-9 after the first quarter and used a 13-12 edge in the second quarter to build a 24-21 halftime lead.
Adams regained the lead at 44-31 after the third frame and outscored the Colts 26-22 in the fourth quarter.
Zak Noor scored 12 and Danny Wunderlich added 10 pints for Troy (5-4). Chris Dorsey added seven points for the Colts.
OAK PARK 81, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 58: Visiting Oak Park kept pace in the OAA White Division with this 23-point road win Tuesday.
Six players scored between eight and 11 points for Oak Park (6-2, 1-0).Joshua Friday led the Knights with 11 points, the same total as Charles Mason. Antoine Jones and Stephon Williams both followed with 10 points for Oak Park.
