MONDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL DISTRICT ROUNDUP: Pontiac holds off Kettering; Mott edge Avondale; Northwest rolls Madison
TROY — Pontiac staved off Waterford Kettering’s fourth quarter barrage to post a 60-54 victory over the Captains in a Class A boys basketball district opener at Troy High School Monday.
Kettering (4-17) outscored the Phoenix 24-11 to make it a six-game deficit inside the final minute. The Captains could not complete the comeback.
Javante Lavallis scored 12 points for Pontiac (9-12). Trajan Seay added 10points and Dijon Cogdell added nine points for the Phoenix.
John Starber scored 14 points for Kettering (4-17). Kakuan Williams added 11 points for Kettering.
Pontiac led 20-7 after the first quarter and 38-20 at the half. The Phoenix moved the advantage to 49-33 entering the fourth quarter but had a hard time shaking off the upset-minded Captains until the waning seconds.
MORE CLASS A
WATERFORD MOTT 43, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 40: Avondale closed with a 16-12 run, but the Yellowjackets came up short in their upset bid of the favored Corsairs Monday at Troy High.
Quincy Norman scored 18 and Khalil Malone added 15 points for Mott (14-7).
Zarrick Sturgis made four 3-pointers and scored 16 for Avondale. Jabbar Mims added eight points for the Yellowjackets (9-12), who led 20-16 at the half.
Mott used a 15-4 third quarter run to lead for good and build a 31-24 lead entering the fourth quarter.
CLASS C
ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 66, MADISON HEIGHTS MADISON 43: Nathan Drews pumped in 24 pints, as Lutheran Northwest cruised to the district-opening win Monday.
Greg Maynard added 17 points and Evan Rouce followed with nine points for Northwest (9-11). The Crusaders opened with a 18-6 run and added a 20-12 spurt in the second quarter for a 38=18 lead at the half.
Anthony Lowe scored 12 for Madison. Jaylin Golson and Davon Payne added eight points apiece for the Eagles, who held a 25-21 edge in the second half.
CLASS D
WATERFORD OUR LADY OF THE ALEKS 72, STERLING HEIGTHS PARKWAY CHRISTIAN 49: Nick Robak scored 23 and the Lakers rolled to this district opening win.
Garrett Ross added 15 for Lakes (12-8), who led 28-15 at the half. WOLL outscored the Eagles 44-34 in the second half.
Jonathan Kocik scored 18 for Parkway Christian.
BIRMINGHAM ROEPER 60, AUBURN HILLS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 45: The host Roughriders upended the cougars in this district opener Monday.
Garrett House scored a game-high 27 points to lead Roeper (7-13). Abe Hawshi added 10 points.
Luke Robore scored 17 for Auburn Hills Christian, which led 14-8 after the first quarter and 27-26 at the half.
The roughriders went on a 19-6 third quarter run to change the tides and closed with a 15-12 surge.
CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 79, FLINT MICHIGAN FOR THE DEAF 25: The Moutaineers opened with a 32-0 run and put this district game away early. By halftime, Everest led 48-8.
Ben Bellestri scored 12 to lead Everest. Blake Beachamp added nine points and Steven Scott and Danny McMahon followed with seven points each for the Mountaineers (13-7), who held a 31-17 edge in the second half.
Jamar Mitchell and Asante Matten both scored nine for MSD.
