CLARKSTON — Behind a dominating defensive effort, Clarkston Springfield Christian advanced to the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division II state finals for the second straight year.
The second-seeded Eagles rolled to a 60-25 victory over Milford West Highland Christian in the MACS-II state semifinals.
Springfield Christian (12-7) rolled out to a 20-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
“They had some size, but our guards were all over them,” said Springfield Christian coach James Day. “We got out to a big lead early and the game was never close.”
The Eagles added to its big advantage with a 12-4 run in the second quarter, which built a 32-6 lead at the half. Another 12-4 run in the third quarter upped the advantage to 44-10 before Day emptied his bench.
Springfield Christian closed with a 16-15 run in the fourth quarter.
“We knew after the first quarter that we were going to win. (West Highland) was very young and their guards were inexperienced,” said Day. “We are blessed to be able (to play in the state championship game) again.”
Heather Key scored a game-high 26 points, outscoring the opposition all by herself. Lauren Key added 12 points and Savanah Berinski followed with 10 points and 12 rebounds for Springfield Christian.
West Highland Christian only sent four players into the scoring column, led by Lauren Schneider’s nine points. Abby Horsley added eight points for the Mustangs.
The win propelled the Eagles into the finals for the fourth time in school history. Last season Springfield Christian lost to Kinross Maplewood Baptist in the MACS-II finals.
Springfield Christian and Maplewood Baptist will face again at 11 a.m. Saturday as part of a four-game state finals weekend, all at Springfield Christian.
