TOP GIRLS SOCCER PLAYERS

NorthOaklandSports Senior Editor Dan Stickradt takes a look at the area’s premier girls soccer players.

FIELD PLAYERS

(Listed alphabetically)

MERLIN BECKWITH, Rochester Adams: Named honorable-mention all-state last season, Beckwith was in on only nine goals (six goals, three assists), but was a fine passer and orchestrator of the attack. She is the team’s vocal leader for a squad that is well-balanced as they come.

OLIVIA BRANNON, Troy Athens: Back healthy after missing half of last season with a broken foot, Brannon is a leading candidate for Miss Soccer. A member of the ODP U-18 National Team, Brannon is headed for Virginia. She is the complete package, standing out even in a league of stars.

BRITTANY BUCKLER, Rochester Adams: As rock solid of a defenseman that you’ll find, the Division 1I recruit has built the reputation as being one of the state’s top defenders without anything flashy. Players rarely beat her on the attack and she rarely makes a mistake, which is why Adams reached the Final Four and pitched 10 shutouts last season.

EMILY DZIK, Troy: Dzik was one of the leaders for the Colts last season when they reached the Elite Eight in Division 1, where she earned second-team all-state status. She was as valuable on the defensive end, where Troy amassed 14 shutouts while she chipped in with five goals. Eastern Michigan will receive her services next season.

MIKAYLA FERER, Clarkston: The Wolves are coming off their best season in school history, with Ferer leading the way with 14 goals and her team winning 15 games with the OAA White Division title to boot. The talented sniper will test her mettle this season in the OAA-Red and will be a marked player.

MARISA KOZIKOWSKI, Troy Athens: Headed for Eastern Michigan, Kozikowski was second-team all-state in Division 1 last season and the anchor of the Red Hawks’ defensive schemes. She’s a heady defender who can build out of the back as well as solidify the back line and make the key play to stall an offense.

JESSICA NIEMAN, Rochester: Headed for South Dakota, Nieman is a fourth-year starter who often relishes shutting down standout forwards. True defenders don’t always gain a lot of postseason recognition, but Nieman is one of those pest-like players who can frustrate even the state’s best players.

KYLIE NYLEN, Rochester Adams: This junior made second-team all-state last season and was the team’s highest ranked player, but by no means was she anything flashy. Nylen is one of those players who seems to just go about her business and get the job done, both defensively and offensively.

MEGHAN TOPOLWESKI, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes: Topolewski has helped pave a way for t program still in its infant stages. She led her team to the D-4 state title last season and has now singed with Division I Toledo. The midfielder is one of the top players in D-4.

IRENE YOUNG, Troy: An honorable-mention all-state honoree last season, Young should be the Colts’ main target up top this season. She has a cannon of a shot and seems to score well under pressure against top competition.

GOALKEEPERS

ANDREA STRAUSS, Auburn Hills Avondale: Three-sport standout was first-team all-state in Division 2 last season. Although standing around 5-foot-5, Strauss has the ability to make saves that most keepers don’t make and she does them against top competition.

JENNA O’DELL, Troy Athens: Headed to Iowa State, this fourth-year starter was first-team all-state as a sophomore and despite allowing less than a goal a game last season, did not gain any postseason accolades last season. She’s a solid keeper all the way around, serving on the ODP regional team the past few years. She’s the backbone of a team with expectations of contending for a state crown.
