Athens rallies for three runs in bottom of seventh to oust Utica in district opener

UTICA — Troy Athens brewed up some postseason magic to remain alive in the Division 1 baseball state tournament Tuesday.

The Red Hawks trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, but plated three runs to advance with a 6-5 victory over Utica, the district hosts.

Athens, the home team based on a the draw, advanced to Saturday’s district semifinal with the win and will face Utica Eisenhower at 10 a.m. Troy and Rochester will meet in the other semifinal game Saturday, with the district finals set for 30 minutes after the completion of the second district semifinal.

With runners on second and third base, Chris Harris delivered a walk-off single to cap the rally for Athens. Anthony Carrillo was 2-for-2 with two RBI and scored a run to pace the attack. Ira Land added two RBI and Harris drove home two runs for the Red Hawks.

Alex Harrison, the Red Hawks’ ace, went all seven innings for Athens, striking out six, walking two and giving up only two earned runs

Mario Lombardo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double for Utica.
