Clarkston rolls past Pontiac

CLARKSTON — A couple of misfortunes don’t appear to be deterring Clarkston on the football field in the postseason.

The Wolves, coming off a come-from-behind victory over Lake Orion in Week 9 of the regular season to clinch a playoff berth and a share of the OAA Red Division title, broke open a tight game in the second quarter and eventually rolled past Pontiac, 40-12, in a Division 1 pre-district.

Clarkston, which will host Walled Lake Central for a district championship next weekend — the Vikings stunned defending state champion Lake Orion 20-17 in the other district opener — outscored Pontiac 22-6 in the second half to cool the Phoenix, who scored over 100 points the last three weeks of the season.

Senior Joey Goss rushed 14 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns to carry the Wolves (7-3), who had to forfeit two wins in the regular season for use of an ineligible player.

The Phoenix (6-4) led once on Kezlow Smith’s 1-yard run in the first quarter.

Goss countered with a 4-yard run and Alex Barta, who nailed the ensuing extra point, drilled a 36-yard field goal to put the Wolves up 10-6. Goss added a 2-yard plunge in the second quarter for an 18-6 lead and the Phoenix never seriously threatened the lead.

Baenziger, who had 125 all-purpose yards, added a 15-yard scamper and Ian Erikson scored on runs of 3 and 6 yards for Clarkston. Erickson had eight carries for 56 yards for the Wolves.

Smith capped the scoring for Pontiac with a 30-yard spring in the fourth quarter. Mark Cargle finished with 96 yards on 14 carries for Pontiac.
