OU’s Watterworth named Summit League Player of the Week
ELMHURST. Ill. – Oakland sophomore Bethany Watterworth was named The Summit League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. It is Watterworth’s second time winning the award this season and fourth overall.
The junior from Lake Orion, Mich., averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, as Oakland picked up non-league wins over Dartmouth and Clemson. Watterworth had 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the Golden Grizzlies win over Clemson — the program’s first road win over and Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. Before that she had earned a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three blocks against Dartmouth on Thursday.
Watterworth shot 17-for-29 (59 percent) from the floor, which included shooting 75 percent (9-for-12) in the win over Clemson. She also knocked down three 3-pointers, hitting 43 percent from beyond the arc for the week. Watterworth has now scored in double-figures in 11 of the team’s 12 games this season and has scored over 20 points in eight games this year
This season Watterworth is leading Oakland in scoring (19.2 ppg), rebounding (7.5 rpg) and assists (3.4 apg). She also ranks in the top 30 in the NCAA scoring (19.2, 26th), 3-point field goal percentage (.433, 13th) and free-throw percentage (.886, 24th)
Watterworth and the Golden Grizzlies will battle Providence on the road Wednesday at noon. It is the second game of a four-game road trip for OU.
