Hazelwood’s 29 lifts Oxford past Hamtramck; Avondale tips Northwestern

AUBURN HILLS — Oxford’s visit to the Auburn Hills was a pleasant one Wednesday, as the Wildcats posted an impressive 74-58 non-conference boys basketball victory over Hamtramck.
Mark Hazelwood scorched the net with a game-high 29 points to pace Oxford.
Ken Coffman added 10 points and Chris Calvin scooped up 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.
“Mark has really been playing well. He’s stepped up and been our leader,” said Oxford coach Paul Marfia. “We just need to be more consistent as a team. We’ve come a long ways but we still have work to do. This was a nice win. We got a chance to play a lot to of guys. Once we get to league play, we’ll shore up the rotation a little bit.”
Oxford led 26-22 after the first quarter and used a 18-7 second-quarter run to pull ahead 44-29 at the half. The Wildcats outscored Hamtramck 30-29 at the half.
Anthony Nrecas scored 21 points to lead Hamtramck (1-3) and Anadis Almic added 14 points for the Cosmos.
AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 61, FLINT NORTHWESTERN 59: Avondale edged Northwestern in the Motor City Roundball Classic at Birmingham Detroit Country Day.
Avondale led 17-7 after the first quarter and 28-26 at the half. The Yellowjackets held the narrow lead, using a 22-20 edge in the third quarter before Northwestern outscored Avondale 13-11 in the fourth quarter but could not complete the comeback.
Ray Tillman scored 24 and Tony Harris added 19 points for Avondale (4-1). Jaylan Magee scored 16, Deondre Parks added 15 points and Ahasuerus McDonald twined 13 for Northwestern (3-2).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
WATERFORD OUR LADY OF THE LAKES 50, MT. PLEASANT SACRED HEART 29: This contest between Class D state powers wasn’t a contest at all, as Lakes built a 29-10 lead by the half. Ava Doetsch scored 19 and Lauren Robak added 17 points for WOLL (4-0). Erica Hansen scored 14 and Sara Hansen added seven points for Sacred Heart (3-1).
MADISON HEIGHTS BISHOP FOLEY 48, ROCHESTER ADAMS 44: Bishop Foley used a 20-9 third quarter to take the lead and go on to win the Bishop Foley Holiday Classic.
The Ventures held off Adams with an 18-16 fourth quarter.
Jackie Bieniewicz led Foley with 16 points, part of a balanced attack. Megan Banfelteren scored 14, Nikki Taylor added nine points and Colleen Szakacs chipped in with eight points.
Adams (3-3) led 11-6 after the first quarter and 19-10 at the break. Jocelyn McDougal scored 12 and Karissa Roveda added 12 points for Adams.
“We’ve had six games and we’re only a few points from being 6-0,” offered Adams coach Fran Scislowicz. “We’ve had three losses and all of those games we’re close. We lost to (Rochester) Stoney Creek by a couple points, we lost to (Farmington) Harrison in overtime and we lost this game by four points. In all of those games we’ve had the ball inside the final two minutes with a chance to take the lead. I think once we learn how to learn one of these close games, we’ll be fine. That’s the only thing that’s missing right now.”
