BOYS BASKETBALL: Young’s free throw helps Troy grab OAA-White lead; Rochester rebounds to thump Groves

TROY — There is a new leader in the OAA White Division boys basketball race.

Troy pulled into sole possession of first place. Thanks to the Colts’ 72-70 victory over Berkley Friday, coupled with Ferndale’s 93-81 victory over Auburn Hills Avondale, put Troy in the pole possession.

James Young split a pair of free throws with 1:23 left to give Troy the lead for good.

Young scored a game-high 23 points for Troy (10-1, 7-1), which won for the eighth straight game. Evan Mahone drilled four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and John Stibich twined a trio of long-distance bombs and finished with 11 points for the Colts. Al Wise also scored 10 for Troy and Jeff Holmes chipped in with eight points.

Ryan Bush scored 18, Shane Fitzimmons added 15 points and Connor Reid scored nine, all on 3-pointers, for Berkley.

Troy opened up on fire, grabbing a 26-16 lead after the first quarter. The Colts expanded the lead to 45-31 at the half before cooling off in the second half.

The Bears (6-3, 6-2) fought back, using a 21-10 run in the third quarter to close the gap to 55-52 going into the fourth quarter. Berkley held a 18-17 edge in the finale frame and was able to tie the game at 70-70.

ROCHESTER 62, BIRMINGHAM GROVES 44: With two guards out of the lineup with substantial injuries, the Falcons were still able to bounce back from their first OAA Blue Division loss of the season with this lopsided triumph Friday. Taylor Perry scored a game-high 27 points with 13 rebounds to lead the way. For Rochester (5-4, 4-1),  Billy Klotz added 12 points and Nick Bradley scored 11 for the Falcons. Anthony Henry scored 13 for groves (3-6, 2-3). Rochester led 13-9 after the first quarter and 30-20 at the half. In the third frame, Groves clawed to within 42-34 before the Falcons closed with a 20-10 run to put the game away.
